South Central Chapter field trip

Post by beanie »

After some discussion with some of the other members, I decided to start planing a chapter field trip before it starts getting really hot. The location will be Sherburne WMA located in the Atchafalaya basin. The date we would be shooting for would be June 14th. If this is to short of notice, we could possibility kick around some other date to allow more participation.

Here's a list of the species we have found in the area:

Spiny Softshell
Red Eared sliders
Eastern Musk
Razor back musk
Eastern mud

Cotton mouth
Black masked racer
Broad banded water snake
Copper head
Plain belly water snake
Mississippi ringneck
Rough green snake
Western rat snake

Amphiuma
Marbled salamanders
Eastern newts

Blanchards cricket frog
Fowlers toad
Leopard frog
Bull frog
Gulf coast toad
eastern narrow mouth
squirrel tree frog
green tree frogs
copes gray tree frogs
Bronze frog

American alligator
green anole
little brown skink
broad head skinks
five line skinks

We could either do an early morning trip, or an evening trip that lasts after sundown to get more of the frog species. There is primitive camping for those interested. I'll include some links with information about the area.

And here's the link to a map of the area

Sounds good to me Beanie. Barring any unforeseen issues with work, I should be able to join in. Hopefully, we can get a decent group out there.

Thanks for making the effort to set something up.

Good luck! Sounds hot and full of mosquitoes. Little late for any of the interesting snakes unless you're doing night hikes, I think. If you go out there at night in a boat in some of the swamps you may be able to shine a mud snake on the bank.

I'll be out of pocket then. Pickup a couple of milks while you're there.

Armin, I'll get you all the milks you want. Whole or 2%?

I'll be off that day, but will be on call. Other than that I should be able to make it.

Looks like I can't make it Saturday due to work, but if anyone decides to camp out I can make it Sunday morning.

To those that can attend, do we want to set it up for the morning or would an evening trip be preferred?

I think an AM trip would be better. What side of the WMA would we be meeting on? Close to I-10 or 190?

Morning works for me as well. Probably need to keep an eye on the weather though. Forecast keeps fluctuating, but T-storms are predicted on and off between Friday and Sunday. (Sidenote: Brennan make sure I grab my raincoat from your place).

Let's meet at the check station on the south side. The first one you would encounter coming from I10. We can be there for around 7 and develope a gameplan. Looking foreword to it, hoping for some good finds!

I didn't take many photos, but enjoyed getting out there for a morning.

Chris I don't think that's the first cotton I stepped over and then you found it. The other time though, I think you shinned it bailing out of my boot print in the mud.....
