Lake Hodges Bio-blitz Apr 25-26 - need herpers

Post by Jeff Lemm »

HI everyone,
Frank Santana and I will be leading the herp portion of a SDZ Institute for Conservation Research bio-blitz at Lake Hodges on April 25 (Fri - me) and 26th (Sat - Frank). All are welcome provided you have a fishing license, gps, camera, water, and food. You will also need to sign a waiver (and be 18) to do this. We will be documenting any and all herps (as well as other taxa) from that area. Please PM me if interested in attending and helping out. Thanks!

I haven't received any details about this BioBlitz yet, but I'd like to do an evening/night hike in search of lyre snakes and rosy boas. I'm thinking Friday from about 7-10 PM.

Nate told me he is interested in joining me.

Is this a possibility Jeff?

There will be other Bioblitz people there at night, so it shouldn't be a problem. I will give details soon on pm

Hello, my name is Chris Patnaude and I just joined the FHF (see my Intro post). I live in San Diego and I was wondering if I would be allowed to take part in this or am I too new. I can do Friday for sure and maybe Saturday. I will PM Jeff Lemm but wanted to post my interest here as well. Hope to see everyone next Friday!

Hi Chris,

I'm very doubtful about night-hiking this Friday. I was hoping the daytime high temps. would reach into the mid to upper 80's, but the current forecast says the high will be closer to 70, with showers possible in the evening. I don't think it will be worthwhile.

Jeff,

I just got back from the Mojave and forgot to check the San Diego weather, not looking too good for Friday during the day as well hopefully we will still be able to find some herps. See you on Friday.

Jeff, I talked to David O'Connor and he scheduled me for ants/arachnids from 12-late afternoon on Friday and Herps on Saturday from 8:00am - afternoon. He copied Frank in the response but I'm not sure if you were notified. Either way I'll see you this weekend. Is there a way for me to do herps on Friday morning too?

We will meet at Del DIos Park at 7:45. From there we will go thru a locked gate at 8 am-2 pm to survey the north shore of Lake Hodges with base camp being the boat dock parking lot. SAme agenda on both Friday and Saturday. DO NOT be late or you may not make it in. You will need a fishing license, gps, notebook, food, water, etc. If you have not responded via pm or here, please do so today so I can get a head count. Cya then,
Jeff

Is there a list of the species found? The articles I've seen cited 15 Reptiles and 2 Amphibians, without specifying which ones.

Sorry, I just now saw your question. I don't have the complete list, but I remember..

Garden slender salamander
Alligator lizard
Fence lizard
Skink
Southern Pacific rattlers
Nightsnake
Blindsnake
Red Diamond

The weather was less than ideal...and that's putting it generously!

Yes, right after we found the ruber by the lake on Friday, we also found a two striped garter snake. I also found a male granite spiny in the rocks above the lake. I guess Jeff Nordland saw a striped racer on way back to base camp but did not get any vouchers. Later that day some other people not part of the herp group saw a coachwhip and took a few pics, I believe they filled out the data sheet at the base camp for Frank. We also saw an orange throated whiptail and found baja tree frog tadpoles and one tree frog by the stream. Saturday was more of the same with a few SoPacs and fence lizards while I was still there, sounds like after I left other herps were found per Kents list above. Despite the less than ideal conditions we still managed to find quite a few herps over the 2 days. Had a fun time and got to meet a lot of CA chapter members.
