Two hours ago. Five miles from my house. AND I WAS IN THE OFFICE INSTEAD OF OUT THERE WITH THEM!
Mr. Clement Sim, the gentleman in the photo, will never understand how much I hate him right now

What can I say - that just plain sucks!!! Your day will come my friend. BTW, what is your estimate on length of that critter? Possibly approaching 3 meters?

Thanks for the condolences...Yes, I think three meters would be a good guess.

Sigh, if my wish to see that animal in the same circumstances came true, I would currently only have my right nut.

And the fact that they were BIRDING. None of those guys are herpers in the classical sense, they're naturers. They went to check out that road for birds. Maybe I should lie to the fates about my target species before I hit the road next time. "Just going for a li'l owl spotting..."tacticalveterinarian wrote:Maybe his snake stick was a lucky charm?

Real herpers can't be bothered with tiny cobras. There's a 5 m specimen out there waiting just for you

That's a beautiful, beautiful animal. Even looking at them behind glass is such an adrenaline rush.

Hi Hans, wonderful picture and I know that kind of frustration all too well. But it's what makes herping so edictive..
Re: ^%$#@KingCobra&^%#!grrrrhhhh!!!!
Problem with this, the fates always know! If you try to fool them they will make life worse. They seem to have a twisted sense of humor.Hans Breuer (twoton) wrote: Maybe I should lie to the fates about my target species before I hit the road next time. "Just going for a li'l owl spotting..."
All I know (or at least hope) is if we herp dreamers keep putting in the effort some day the fates will decide we have proved ourselves worthy.

Re: ^%$#@KingCobra&^%#!grrrrhhhh!!!!
I went herping on that road last night and found the biggest Bungarus fasciatus I've ever seen. It's just a coastal nipah swamp with a bit of disturbed forest, so species diversity will be very low....however, some of the largest snakes in Borneo can be found in this habitat: retics, Boiga dendrophila, ratsnakes ... and since it's only a seven-minute drive, that could become my after-dinner roadcruising quickfix!

Is that why herpers always find Pangolins? I know mammal guys who have spent their whole life looking for Pangolins when I've lost count of reports on here with Pangolin by-catch.Hans Breuer (twoton) wrote:And the fact that they were BIRDING. Tough luck with the King BTW. I hope it was at least an enjoyable day in the office

Re: ^%$#@KingCobra&^%#!grrrrhhhh!!!!
As a full-on herper, I don't really care about birds, but have seen so many rare avian reptile species that my birder friends/colleagues have often demanded I start keeping a list.
Meh.
Now, where's my pangolin?

That's the most unhealthy looking King Cobra I've ever seen. Looks like it's straight out of a Thai snake-show.

It's one of those rubber King Cobras they sell at zoo gift shops. Don't be fooled Hans!
