They weren't mating, as males aren't capable. It was a cool sighting to be sure.

I am by no means an expert, but that appears to be more of a ritualistic combat?

I agree that they were males. I just made the topic the title of the article.

Don't EVER read comments on any internet news story about snakes, it will just bring you down. The snakes were not killed irl and that is pretty cool.

That is a pretty badass sighting btw. I'm not even a huge rattlesnake fan, but seeing that would make my year.
Re: Timber Rattlesnakes mating in a drainage ditch
Absolutely thrilled they weren't whacked

"Rattler eggs"?? That's a classic you can buy at Stone Mountain-The world capital for racist rednecks. Not something you find in rocket city. Though, I guess they might be thinking of rattler embryos??

Not killing hots is irresistible.
I'd lay an egg if I killed one.

Wow awesome!! And i'm so close to Huntsville too... grrr wish i could have seen that!!! I'm am shocked that no one killed them, but i'm very grateful no one did. Regarding the negative comments, it's true they can bring you down. Sometimes your passion can cause you pain in that way, but David Hayward has a great comment towards the top.

Yeah very sad what people think of venomous snakes. An animal has an extraordinary adaptation that humans kill it for having. I have a Grandpa who after I was bit by a rattler sat me down and tried to convince me snakes are "evil" and meant to kill you. He says he was chased down and had to jump on his car to get away from a atrox. I respect him but I love snakes and he kills every (venomous) one he sees and I don't think I can ever change his mind.
