Hognose? questionable photo

Post by Mike VanValen » August 23rd, 2013, 1:17 pm

I did not see this snake, but the photo was taken at a place in CT where I herp frequently. The eastern Hognose has been my white whale....

I swear that's the head of a Hognose. Am I only seeing what I want to see here? The body looks a bit long for a hog...

Several of us have been debating on the main forum, and facebook. Someone did a scale count and it points to Hognose. The photo was taken in April. I think this is a thin snake just emerged from brumation.

Head sure looks like a hog to me. But your right if it were only the body I would have said black rat. Maybe there are 2 snakes in this photo?

The person who took the photo says it was only one snake.

hog. most likely a female - they can look long and skinny like that in spring time or post egg laying.

Yarrr, 'tis a hoggie, yer white whale! :D Seriously, I just finished looking through 140+ pictures of hognoses for someone's dissertation project. A hognose can be skinny, but a rat snake can't point it's nose up like that! - Kara
