The Beauty of Reptiles and Amphibians

Post by ahockenberry »

Hi folks,

I do a lot of wildlife photography and most of my wildlife photography friends shoot birds, mammals and the like.
Very few understand why anyone would photograph a reptile or an amphibian. It is amazing to me how many
people have an aversion to them. So one of the things I try to do in online photography forums is to display
the beauty of these animals through close up photographs, which illustrate the beauty, color and variation
of various species and help people gain a better appreciation for them. Slowly but surely I am winning some of
them over.

Here are some examples:

Its funny how some people react to herps. There is an online photography forum that I lurk in where every time somebody post a picture of a snake the photo gets the same predictable, tired responses. Something like, "Nice shot Bob, but I would've needed a 600mm lens with a 2x converter to shoot that!" That's just one of the reasons I prefer this forum. Which online groups do you participate in?

Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing! Smack dab in the middle! I really enjoyed the shots, though, especially the Hyla cinerea. They seem to photograph very well for some reason.

I liked the Ocadia sinensis as well.

Thanks for the comments.

I post in Pixel-Shooter, Pbase, Flickr, and others.

Good observation - yes, I have a few Singapore herps in there

I find that people not only have an ignorance about snakes and such (irrational fear) they also do not
realize how many herp species are at risk (mostly from habitat destruction) and also reckless slaughter
so maybe my message will help reach a few people.

I feel your pain! haha It happens to me at shows/displays sometimes... disgust/fear of anything reptilian or amphibian.

You definitely have some great shots in there - bringing out there beauty is fantastic alleviation to the fears people possess.

You've certainly shown me some beautiful animals. I've admired your work for a while. You have your own style and it's awesome.
