A friend who is on a birding trip to Brazil is looking to ID this snake:
My friend writes, "It was in the 'upper part' of Serra de Canastra National Park, Minas Gerais, Brasil. In cerrado habitat, specifically campo limpo, grassy open savanna with very few trees."
Thanks, and happy herping,
Billy

Re: ID Please: Mystery Snake from Brazil
You know, I was looking at the photo and thinking, 'that thing sure looks like a whip snake,' and then, 'but there are no Masticophis in Brazil.' I'm wrong on the second part, so maybe I'm right about the first part.
Re: ID Please: Mystery Snake from Brazil
According to distribution maps its way south of mentovarius distribution. I guess Philodryas sp, but no idea what species.
Re: ID Please: Mystery Snake from Brazil
Chironius of some sort maybe?

Looks like it could be philodryas patagoniensis. The pictures look pretty similar and the range is correct.
I've never seen the species though so I'm just going off of google

Philodryas patagoniensis. Watch out cause many philodryas are venomous. The related p. olfersi has recorded many fatal bites almost like the boomslang. Child deaths known.
The brazillian name is Parelheida for p. patagoniensis

Watch out for them Philodryas sp., their venom isn't very well studied. I contributed somewhat with my olfersii incident 6 months ago.

Re: ID Please: Mystery Snake from Brazil
not sure on the range limit but it looks like some sort of Conophis or Coniophanes, very similar to Road Guarders I have seen in Belize...
