'My Life as a Turkey', a PBS documentary about Joe Hutto, who raised wild turkeys in the Florida oak-hammocks. Has any one else seen this epic documentary? This a must see for any field herpetologist and naturalist. It may be as good as any I've ever seen. And it gives the viewer an insight to turkey's behavior and their relationships to herps - especially diamondback rattlesnakes & turtles, which Joe referred to as 'snakes in a box'. Great film, and I would encourage anyone that has not viewed it to download and enjoy. Thanks for reading.
RoCk ON!

This documentary aired in the UK a few months ago. I didn't expect to enjoy it but was absolutely hooked by the end of the programme. It's a classic and would echo 'Walk-about's' comments.
Well worth watching!

I also saw it a couple years ago and enjoyed it thoroughly......stuff like this makes owning a television a good investment.

If I remember correctly, a member of this forum provided the snakes/snake-handling for the film. It was excellently done.

I don't know how a naturalist wouldn't enjoy this documentary. Awesome! Incredible!

I always like PBS's nature films, AE history films are generaly the other end of the spectrum in accuracy. My favorate pbs herp show yet is "Lizard Kings: On the Trail of the Monitor Lizards: NOVA"

I agree with all the above. An excellent documentary. I didn't think I would care for a program about turkey either, but it is so well done that you can't help but be sucked in. I have seen it multiple times. And you'll notice how you don't have to use ridiculous antics, like some of the other "nature" shows on tv these days, when a program is well done.

Not herps, but PBS has one called "the natural history of the chicken" that is very well done and totally hilarious

I watched this tonight. It was wonderful, except for the scenes from the factory farm and the story of the headless rooster. Those two parts were disturbing. But the bulk of the movie is an awesome tribute to the utterly amazing, vastly underrated animals known as chickens. Not herps, but PBS has one called "the natural history of the chicken" that is very well done and totally hilarious
Steve, if you know of any more good chick (as in chicken) flicks, I'd appreciate a heads-up.

One of the best documentaries I've seen in a long time. There's a book also :
Illumination in the Flatwoods: A Season with the Wild Turkey

Makes we wish I had a bunch of imprinted turkeys to take with me every time I go herping. What a great doc.
