Beautiful work. Very nice.
Your Great Basin Gophersnake looks like it could be a deserticola/affinis intergrade. Is that possible?
It looks quite different from the ones we have here in the CA Mojave Desert.

I doubt it. It was found just south of the Utah border, above the Grand Canyon. Well within the deserticola range.

Thanks guys.
Dave,
Next year I plan on focusing more on tigers, cerbs, and montanes. But my targets for the year will be hogs, saugs, vines, milks, yuma fringe toes, and flat tails. You know, the easy stuff

Seeing as that is not an AZ Saug...it shouldn't count haha!
Crappy pic of what was the most smokin hot saug I have ever seen.
Old photos, Mr. Mills probably recognizes these ones.
Ill have to dig around for the other shots.

Lovely massasauga photos Brandon.. And yes it is from AZ at a spot just off of hwy80 given to me from Mr.Holycross! I'm hoping ill run into you as we'll buddy
Re: My EOY for 2012 - Same as Main Forum (DUW)
MJ and Brandon had to post pics to rub it in my face! haha
MJ hit me up. I was going to go to NM for saugies, but I would rather get an AZ saug! I like springtime in SE AZ - less herpers and great weather! Nice campfires & bbq, beer, bears, pyros, and rattlesnakes. haha
Brandon, what makes you say that MJ's saug isn't from AZ? It kinda looks more like a NM saug, but what do I know. I remember photos of those babies you guys found - definately jealous! Have you hiked any saugs? Post more AZ saugs up - there aren't too many photos of them.

Thanks Paul! haha Nice story. A friend of a friend saw a DOR milk over there. Not sure how many were found this year or last.
I don't roadcruise much, which is why the saug-hunting kills me. haha But I roadcruised more in that area than anywhere else this past year. That road has always been pretty productive for me - but never can find the two coolest snakes on that road (your milk and my saug).

Cool info! Bravo on not finding them on the road.Paul Lynum wrote:I've never road cruised a milk on that road either. The habitat on hwy 80 is not a geographic favorite for a milk snake. The milks are more of a mountain bench and slope snake for down there as where in N. AZ they prefer flat level valleys. My four Cochise milks were all field collected. Any milk that ends up on 80 is a result of "bleedout" from their higher elevation stronghold.
Not that you care either hahaPaul Lynum wrote: I have no idea what the saugs are doing lol.

I've never seen a milk on that road either. Desert 'saugs tend to be in the relic prairie grassland habitat, preferrably near water, imo, like cattle tanks or runoff or whatever.

Thanks again everyone. And thanks for posting all the sauga pics. I really hope to see one next year.
Dave and Terry, you guys know you are welcome to join me anytime. I plan on hitting the Parker and Yuma dunes again in April. I'll let you know the details when it gets a little closer and I can get an idea of what the weather will be like.

Norman, I've only seen one 'saug in AZ, but many in other places and have studied their habitats and behavior. I'm also thinking of the fact that they are treated as a relict prairie species in the field guides.
Ben, I'm game to go in April. Maybe we can finalize the plans in early April when we start getting a feel for the best weather.

I don't road cruise that much either, Norman. I'd rather see herps in their natural habitat. But a few years ago I cruised 80 with an old friend for two nights in a row. We stopped for 52 snakes and 47 of them were Mojave rattlesnakes. It was kind of a waste of time, if ya know what I mean. Of course, finding snakes in their natural habitat can be a real challenge also.
The Eastern milk and Eastern massasauga were both study species of mine back in MI. Two of my old time favorites. I don't keep milks or any hots, but I love seeing these guys 'au naturale'. I appreciate the fact that you and others try to find these herps on foot in their habitat. That way we can learn more about their natural history and better i.d. the habitat that needs protecting. With the 'saugs it could be very difficult to see their habitat, because I believe most of it is on private land. I think Holycross had permissions to study them on some ranches.

Thanks Terry. I actually haven't seen many scutes in that area. I see lots of longnoses though, but usually see decent variety. Hopefully 2013 pays off
