A few Spring and Red Salamanders.

Post by Jared Cain »

Went hiking the other day to find some Spring Salamanders since I have yet to find any this year. I found tons of young ones and a nice adult. This brings my salamander count to 8 of the 11 species that are in my general area. I have yet to see Four Toed, Jefferson and Marbles but all in all its been a good year for me. Unfortunately all the pics are taken from a crappy phone camera since my camera is now toast :(

Two of the Red Salamanders I found.

Now for a few of the Spring Sallies.

Check out this adult!! This is the biggest one I have ever found!

Really wish I could have snapped some crisp shots of them but I dont have much to work with at the moment. Cant wait to get a new camera!

Two of the coolest salamanders, for sure! Your larvae are actually Pseudotriton ruber.

Thanks for the clarification. Do you know of any good resources that will help me ID the egg masses and larvae?

There really aren't any great resources, but I'm working on putting a larval guide together for plethodontids.

I agree, P. ruber. These two are one of the hardest for me to discern. I'm glad Todd spoke up because I was going to let it slide as I was not 100%.

I have a larval guide PDF I have made for most mid-Atlantic region larvae, but I am too damn lazy to post it. If you send me a PM I can email it to you.

Beautiful! Love the pics! Your phone still takes better pics than my point and shoot camera (admittedly I did drop it into a brook).

May I ask what county?
