Handful of shots from 2012. NV, AZ, CA.

Post by Jason Hull »

These are a few pictures of some of the animals that I came across this year in NV, AZ, and CA.

I'll go with Nevada first since it's the best state in the union. :thumb:

A cool spider that I almost walked into. I'm not sure what kind.

Image

Adult and hatchling Great Basin Collared Lizards.

Image

Image

I was very surprised that these California Bighorn Sheep let us get as close as they did to take these pics.

Image

Image

Image

Some of their habitat in N/W Nevada.

Image

A couple colubrids from the area.

Image

Image

Image

Desert Horned Lizard.

Image

In late Summer I found myself here hoping to see some Pigmy Short Horned lizards. They have a pretty limited range here in our state.

Image

It wasn't the best time of year for my search but I did find these two newborns.

Image

Image

This old boy passed through the area twelve years before NV was even a state.

Image

I'll wrap up Nevada with a few lutosus.

I finally got a chance to get down to Arizona after not visiting the state for a couple of years. I didn't take many photos but I had a great time with good friends.

Juvenile Sonoran Gopher.

Image

Bat with some crawlers on it.

Image

Short Horned Lizard found in the road way.

Image

Two of the lepidus that we saw. A first for me.

Image

Image

My friend spotted this beauty out on the crawl.

Image

Nice looking willardi. The only live one that we saw.

Image

I am a big fan of the Speckled Rattlesnake so I was thrilled to get a chance to see these two. They were a great way to wrap up my trip to AZ.

Image

Image

My year usually starts out with a trip or two to Southern CA. There is normally still snow on the ground here in Reno when herping is in full swing down south.

My buddy flipped what I think locals refer to as a "cheater boa".

Image

Large S.D. Alligator Lizard stretched out on the road.

Image

This Legless Lizard was a lifer for me.

Image

My little guy trying to make heads or tails of a Ringneck Snake.

Image

Couple of young Cal Kings.

Image

Image

Nice orange Spec. taking it easy in the rocks.

Image

It seems that some of the folks that live and herp in So Cal. are not big on helleri. I for one like any snake with a rattle so the abundance of Southern Pacific's down there does not bother me at all.
These are a few from earlier this year.

Image

Image

Image

My buddy started baggin on me for stopping to take a picture of this cactus flower so I felt compelled to post it.

Image

Some Panamint Rattlesnakes.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Curious Whipsnakes.

Image

Some snakes from the N. Sierra.

Image

Image

Image

An Amphibian for good measure.

Image

Poser Pond Turtle shot.

Image

Some oreganus to finish it off.

Nice post/photos Jason! It was cool meeting you - hope to cross paths again. Love all the crote shots, but I also liked all the phrynosoma (especially the pigmy short horneds) and mtn king shots. Take care

Enjoyed your post - thanks.

Great photography all round. The Collared lizard shot with the background view took my eye.

Cheers.

Jason, thanks for the tour through some wonderful country. Although not a fan of grafitti or carving one's name, that pioneer petroglyph is kind of cool. I wonder if his descendents (if any) know about it? Also the whipsnakes, can you tell us a bit about that? I don't ever recall finidng more than a pair together, is that a hibernaculum?

Thanks for this post of some of my favorite regions. Vic

Love it! Great stuff :thumb:

Vic, in regards to graffiti, spoiling of lands etc. Yesterday's trash dump is today's archaelogical treasure ;-)

Very nice series all around. Never herped Nevada more than scratching the edges. Always in the long term plans to spend some more time there. What are the parasites on the bat? Lice?

Any other pics of the pyro? That is a nice snake. What Mtn range?

Thanks,

FH

George N. Jaquith, who carved his name on the cliff at High Rock Canyon in 1852, made it to California and later Oregon. He was killed on an expedition against some Bannock Indians in the Steen Mountains of Oregon in April 1867. Brenda Jaquith, a descendant, is a secretary at the University of San Francisco.

Great stuff jason thanks for sharing. Its hard to beat the solitude (and lack of people) that is the great state of Nevada.

Beautiful! It's great to see some of what the rest of us missed that day in AZ (although I was already tormented with the pyro....). The shot of the willie is stellar, and the banded king is really striking. Helleri would be alright, if they'd just keep their mouths shut!

That first cal king, nearly true black and ivory white is about as pretty as any wild type I have seen, I am guessing its location, would you be willing to tell the region of the state it was found. A real beauty. :thumb: Vic

Agreed ...it appears to be an adult in perfect lighting and close-up ...not a hint of brown creeping in.

Well done brother. A much needed view of ground we both think is the best in the nation!

By the way, Argiope trifasciata is your spider.

Wow! Thank you for all good words.

Bryan - Thanks man. It's been fun watching my boys discover nature.

Norman - Thanks. It was fun getting out there with you also. We'll do it again sometime for sure.

Rags - Thank you. That little lizard must have just hatched out to face the world. It was tiny.

Dr. Dark - Thanks. Those whipsnakes are characters for sure.

Mulebrother - Thanks. Come back to the West. We can always use more hillbillys

Andy - Thanks man. That z was definitely a welcome find. I love the high black ones.

VICort and monklet - Thank you guys. Yes. The whipsnakes were coming out of hibernation.
Here are a few more getula. They are all from the same general area in Washoe Co. Nevada. All pretty dark.

Fieldherper - Thanks. Nevada is a fun place. I've lived here all my life and I have no plans of leaving. I'm not sure what those bugs are. The bat looks pretty squirrely on it's own IMO. No other good pics of the pyro sorry.

Geqqo - Thank you for posting the info on old George. I figured that he must have crossed some indians somewhere.

Kent - Thank you. Your right. Rattlesnakes are much more enjoyable without your hands in their mouth.

Robyn - Thank you.

Todd - Thanks. We missed you out there in AZ this year.

Riley - Thanks amigo. I know you can appreciate the fine state of NV. We've gotta get you back out here one day.

Fundad - Thank you. Gotta love those kingsnakes.

Ross - Thanks man.

B - Thanks much. I had a great time this year. Thanks for having me down. I really enjoyed it. Can't wait until Spring

Heres to another year in the books.

Good stuff Jason, was a good year of snakes and beer, lol. I still see you and Blake passed out in the back of the truck with your legs dangling off the tailgate in 30 degree weather, lol. And the dent in my door will always remind me to keep them shut when Blake is around! Can't wait for our next adventure!
