Finds from the past month

Post by Kevin McRae »

Hi,
I spent some time in New Brunswick where I had time to search for amphibians. On my way back home to Manitoba I made a few stops in Ontario. Thanks to all who gave me advice on herping Ontario, especially Dan who showed me around for a day.

I don't want to repost any of the same photos so here is my post from earlier in the year. http://www.fieldherpforum.com/forum/vie ... +brunswick

We'll start in New Brunswick.

Wood Turtle - In June/July I found several of these turtles on the roadway. Strange enough I never did see any DOR reptiles in New Brunswick.

Northern Map Turtle - I caught this beautiful turtle while snorkelling.

Northern Watersnake - I learned I should never handle these snakes. They sure like to bite and musks don't they?

Eastern Gartersnake

Eastern Black Ratsnake - This was my target species. I found three in the same spot within ten minutes of looking, haha.

Neonate Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake - Another one of my targets. I found this neonate within the first 30 minutes of searching for saugas.

When I got home back to Manitoba I did a few trips to Spruce Woods Provincial Park.

Mudpuppy - My first mudpuppy and only 30 minutes from where I lived all of my life. Who knew they were so easy to find! Amazing salamanders, my new favourite!

Nice post and very nice photography! :thumb: I think your moth is a white-lined sphinx? Looks just like the ones I grew up with in Ohio. The water snake looks like it's tending toward melanism - at least I never saw one that dark. And, shouldn't we all be glad that tiger beetles don't grow to 2 or 3 feet?! :D

Very interesting. We don't get nearly enough posts of northern species like Mink Frogs on here.

Thanks for posting.

Keven, that's so awesome! I'm glad you had such an outstanding summer. Are there any target lifers that still have you skunked? I think all of mine are on there :)

Thanks guys!

Ian, I need to herp BC....bad. I hope I can make it out there eventually.

Mink frogs are some of my favourite amphibians. Easy to find if you're in the right habitat!

Give me lots of notice and I'll make the treck with you to BC. The entire Okanagan Valley has me stumped! But I have a good handle in the southwest :)

Really nice photos, the scenics and also some great finds. I am impressed with the diversity you found in an area I know so little about. I did not think anyone could write/photo the maritmes without including a lobster, but you did include a crab! Nice work, I enjoyed it and I hope to visit one day. I especially liked the Massasauga.
