Northern Zululand , South Africa

Post by mariquensis »

A "few" finds from a weekend away.
I managed to record 21 species and two subspecies of frogs
in 36 hours, most are picture but a few are omitted of the more common
species. Not too many snakes to speak of but with Amphibian biodiversity like this i was not complaining!

Grass frog's of the genus Ptychadena were prolific recorded five species in
a relatively small area.

Ptychadena mascarensiensis- Mascarena Grass Frog
Image

Ptychadena oxyrhynchus - Sharp Nosed Grass Frog
Image

Ptychadena mossambica - Broad Banded Grass Frog
Image

Ptychadena porosissima - Striped Grass Frog

The same species showing colour variation

Schismader macarens - Red Toad
Image

Tomopterna natalensis- Natal Sand Frog
Image

Afrixalus delicatus - Delicate Leaf Folding Frog
These frogs are tiny adults average around 22mm
Image

Hyperolius marmoratus taeniatus - Painted Reed Frog ( Eastern Sub
Species)
This small frog has an ear piercing call that becomes quite deafening when
40-50 are all calling at once.

Hyperolius argus - Argus Reed Frog
Image

Leptopelis mossambicus - Brown Backed Tree Frog
These frogs are really quite regal in the flesh, they are quite
ferocious and came across a few actually eating other smaller Hyperolius sp
and Ptychadenas sp
.

Kassina maculata - Red legged Kassina
Image

No guessing why they are called red legged?

Amietophrynus pardalis - Eastern Leopard Toad

Pyxicephalus edulibis - African Bull Frog

Phrynomantis bifasciatus - Banded Rubber Frog

Xenopus laevis - Common Platanna

Bradyodion setaroi - Setaro's Dwarf Chameleon

Dasypeltis scabra - Common/Rhombic Egg Eater

Gonionotophis capensis capensis - Common File Snake

Great selection of frogs there.

Do Kassina maculata have the same 'popping' call as other Kassina? The frog chorus must be deafening when it starts up.

Hyperolius are a stunning group of frogs.

Thanks for posting (Got any more?)

Wonderful photos again. You have some great looking frogs in South Africa but wow, those Painted Reed Frogs are especially nice.
