Armchair herping - how many herps?

Post by Jon Wedow »

While on vacation in Florida my sister took this photo for me. How many herps do you see?

Are there more than the two obvious ones?

I see the anole on the log and the ratsnake. To the lower right of the ratsnake I see the shadow of two more anoles but I don't see them physically in frame.

Hm, I could be dead wrong on my circles, but these look like herps to me...

So yes there are two obvious ones... plus a third, and it's not an anole. That's all that I could find anyway. I don't think that the two circles in the right half of the above photo are anything

It looks like photobucket downsized and took out some detail. This photo may help but you can still make out the herp in the first pic.

I see something blue to the right end of the log and bramble... could that be the tail of a female five lined skink?

Yep it's a skink but I don't know which species. It's still hard to make out in this lousy pic but you can see the eye, a leg and of course the blue tail.

Very cool.
Judging by the Yellow Rat, you must have been in central FL.

Trey
Why do you say that?
General rule, Trey. (Of course there can be exceptions)
The farther north you go, generally the adult stripes, particularly the lateral stripes, get thicker and bolder
AND
The yellow fades to gray quickly as you move northwest of Marion County, FL.

NE Peninsula FL up to SC along the coast, the yellow gets sometimes greenish yellow.

Check out these data base entries with the record number search, starting in the southern peninsula FL, and working northward. Pay attention to the thickness and boldness of the lateral stripes and the intensity of yellow.

2134 Lee Co SW coast
1406 Martin Co. SE Coast
40528 Orange Co (Orlando)
1771 Lake Co (Just west of Orlando)
82056 Brevard Co (Just east of Orlando)
56900 Marion Co.
3274 Alachua Co - These are some of the ugliest Yellows (very faded yellow)

Now jump out of Florida uo to SC

56540 South Coastal South Carolina
19404 North Coastal South Carolina

Then up to NC where Yellow and Black genes are mixed:
32340 North Carolina
