Looks like the letter K is another you know what in the punchbowl. I'll cut back in to get us moving again.

Owen, that's a spectacular photo. Unfortunately, it's an Eared Grebe.

I try my best to play, but as a non-birder, I can screw upchrish wrote:Owen, that's a spectacular photo. Unfortunately, it's in Eared Grebe.
So I withdraw the grebe and replace with House Finch
Re: Alphabirding
Oooh, yellow variant. That should be worth something extra.Owen wrote:I try my best to play, but as a non-birder, I can screw upchrish wrote:Owen, that's a spectacular photo. Unfortunately, it's in Eared Grebe.

Re: Alphabirding
I'd say Owen gets a bonus point for the yellow variant and another one for the overall excellence of the photo!
Chris, its your game. Aren't you the one who determines points? (Reminds me of the City of New Orleans; "... penny a point, ain't no-one keepin' score...")

Re: Alphabirding
You non-birders are great photographers.
I think I'm short on "F's". Anybody had any experience with services that turn slides into digital? I've thousands to switch over.

Re: Alphabirding
If you have that many, it might be cheaper to just buy a decent slide scanner. That's what I ended up doing a few years ago. I bought Nikon Coolscan ED. It is great, I just have to find a few weeks to have the time (and desire) to scan slides. Funny how when it comes time to scan them, I find myself saying "ehhh, that one's not good enough,...nor that one....nor that one....".nightdriver wrote:You non-birders are great photographers.

Re: Alphabirding
Owen, that is wonderful! Every feather in glorious detail. I peeked at the EXIF and it says 500mm. What's your glass?
Re: Alphabirding
Tamron 200-500mm f5-6.3 (I shoot at f/7.1 or f/8 for best image at 500mm). It helps when the bird poses for you since the lens hunts a little with AF. It's probably the best lower cost 500mm out there ($769 new in DEC 2008). Thanks!periglenes wrote:Owen, that is wonderful! Every feather in glorious detail. I peeked at the EXIF and it says 500mm. Re: Alphabirding
I love my Sigma 150-500 and I also get my sharpest shots about F8. I like the Optical Stabilization as it definitely helps with hand-held shooting and working off a monopod. But AF hunts pretty badly on my Nikon D60. Hoping to improve that with a D5100 if I weasel my way off the naughty list.

Summer Tanager
This guy was very cooperative, posing for about 10 minutes. He was also very uncooperative, only posing on that stupid fence and never once giving me a shot on a natural perch. Oh how frustrating!

Re: Alphabirding
Uh-oh....we've already used
Inca Dove
Indigo Bunting
Ipswitch Sparrow
There are a lot of birds still that begin with the letter I, but I'm out. I do think I photographed an Inland Thornbill and an Intermediate Egret sometime, but those are buried in my slides somewhere. I can't believe I don't have a shot of an Ivory-billed Woodcreeper since I've seen about 500 of those.
There are some easier I birds....
Island......(there's a US one for this)
Indian.....
Imperial........ (ok, there's only a few of those)

Steller's Jay
I just realized that J's may be hard. If no one has one, I'll jump start it with a Java Sparrow or Japanese White-eye (stuff from Hawai'i).

Where'd ya pick up the Terek Nightdriver?
Re: Alphabirding
J has been a bad one for us. I've used my only J, so a Java Sparrow, Japanese White-eye or Juniper Titmouse would be great.
