They are all lovely, but the roseate spoonbills are my favorite. So beautiful!

Nice work Mark, those are outstanding. You have a knack for getting the obllique lighting, the wigeon and the osprey really stand out. Thanks for sharing these, they are indeed worthy. ...Two pileateds at once, that is something not often seen. How do you account for it, are they a breeding pair or siblings near a nest? Are they common in your area? We find them in the tall redwoods and pine forests in California, and they are always an exciting find. Vic

Vic, there is actually a 3rd on the other side of the tree and I'd assume all were a family. I saw them earlier in another snag and there were 4..Photo was lousy....
(Didn't mean to upload the huge pix in the first o p...)
I rarely see more than the occasional pair together but see loners almost daily at work..(at least hear them :) )

here's another I can never get a good clear shot of....

The more photos you post, Mark, the more I'm liking them! Thanks for all the beautiful and interesting shots of beautiful and interesting birds! :thumb:

You're making me miss FL something terrible, though...

WOW! I knew American White Pelicans are giagantic birds (in fact they have some of the largest wingspans for NA birds), but I didn't think the size extreme between them and a Spoonbill would be so apparent. Looks photoshopped!

Thanks Gerry!

Andy, I'd sure hate to get hit by one of those pelicans as they take off low! I dunno what they may weigh but I do know it'd be a painful experience...:)

I liked your peckers. :-) I was walking around in the woods across from my parents' property one day last year and there were 4 or 5 pileated on one pine tree. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera on me. :-(

Mark,

Those are some great shots! What's your max zoom range? I bought a 300mm a while back for birds and turtles and unfortunately haven't put it to much use. I need to but I generally don't devote much patience to birds, and turtles as the case is.

Hi Shane, most of these were taken with a point and shoot type.....Canon sx 20......
I'm likely to upgrade slightly....I'm a cheapskate and usually get stuff when it's on clearance or similar...haha..

I do miss my dearly departed S3. Macro and mid range were great but not so much on the zoom (12x) even though I tried. Are you hitting many of the posted shots at 20x?

These are great. I've not seen all of the birds you've got pictures of, mostly the shorebirds. I'm too busy herping I guess  I like the snipe, the oystercatcher, and the curlew the best. How can you tell the the dowitcher early in the post is not a breeding plumage willet? I have trouble with my shorebirds probably because I never see them. Everyrthing I find looks like willets, sanderlings and ruddy turnstones to me.
