Verrrry nice shots Brian. May I be so bold as to ask what camera body/lens combo you're using?

Re: A few of my better bird shots
Sure...are you ready for this? A Nikon Coolpix P-610 with 60x optical zoom and 16 mp. Built in zoom lens, no attachments are available. It's a point and shoot. But I shoot everything on Manual setting, hand held. And I'm pretty good in photoshop... Thanks for the compliment.John Martin wrote:Verrrry nice shots Brian. Nice shots Hubbs That Scaled Quail looks cool. I don't think I've seen a picture of one of those before.

Wow, your point and shoot shots put mine to shame! I thoroughly enjoyed.

Re: A few of my better bird shots
Wonderful pictures. I especially like the red-faced warbler and the painted redstart. Maybe I like red... . I have a different point and shoot with a zoom lens, and when I try to take pictures of birds, and they're in bushes, I have a dickens of a time convincing the camera what to focus on. I think your titmouse picture might have been difficult for this reason. Is there a way to convince your camera what you want to focus on, or trick it? I have been trying to take pictures of little bear cubs in Yellowstone and the stinkers don't want to climb the trees that don't have leaves and brush.

Re: A few of my better bird shots
well, titmice are just tough in general...LOL that's my best shot of one. There is no way to convince the camera of anything, you just have to keep pushing the focus button until it actually focuses on the subject. I have given up taking pics of birds surrounded by leaves. But, I shoot everything on manual and try to only use 100 or 200 ISO. I also hand hold for all my shots (No time for a tripod with birds...) and put everything into photoshop to clean it up. Sorry if this answer is late. I been gone...BethH wrote:Wonderful pictures. I especially like the red-faced warbler and the painted redstart. Maybe I like red... . Thanks, but being a photo major in college might have had a little to do with it. LOLintermedius wrote:Wow, your point and shoot shots put mine to shame! I thoroughly enjoyed.

Also, never using any auto setting has a lot to do with it. The camera does not know what you want...NEVER believe the camera...
Here's a new pic from my last trip to the Midwest...

Re: A few of my better bird shots
I am a herper that takes pics of birds...I am not a true birder in that I can just watch birds...I need to photograph them, and once I have a decent shot of a species I never need to see it again... It's been a fun quest, and will continue to be...because there's a lot of bird species...and i've only got 340 of them photographed...
Re: A few of my better bird shots
Outstanding shots, that Sulphur-bellied looks like quite the beast. I didn't pay enough attention to birds when I was in the Chiricahuas, these are great.
Thanks,
Nick

I haven't even been to the Chiricahuas yet to look for birds...
Re: A few of my better bird shots
A number of the flycatchers have a little top knot... like the kingbirds, and that last photo of the Pee-wee. It looks like it might be where some catch-a-bug-muscle attaches, rather than like the crest of a cardinal or titmouse. Do you know if that "knot" has something to do with the business of catching bugs in the air? Thanks for any information, and for sharing the pretty pictures.

Re: A few of my better bird shots
OK, thought I would direct this post to Mr. Brian Hubbs, since he is solely at fault for making me spend a fair amount of money . Ever since you answered my question about what camera you were using for your exceptional bird photos I've been studying the Coolpix zooms. Well, 2 days ago, after much online research and reading many reviews/pros and cons, I bit the bullet and purchased the Coolpix P900. I haven't even had a chance to play with it much at all yet, but I can only hope I get results like yours. Trouble is, I've NEVER learned/used any post editing software - might have to get into that . Actually the P900 doesn't offer RAW, so I may be screwed there anyway? I'll post some pics when I get the opportunity. The 83X zoom just stole my heart... Should be a good addition to my D300s and assorted lenses.
