When I get a little time, I'll sit down and scribble up an appropriate review, but here's a quickie.....

Simply put, this is a wonderful book. I don't think I've enjoyed a herp book so much since I read Harry Greene's "Snakes", and I've read a lot of herp books in the interim.

I love Hans' writing style - his sense of humor, apparent in his FHF posts, permeates every chapter of the book, and makes every page a true delight to read. He intersperses his excellent species descriptions with detailed and often hilarious accounts of personal encounters with the animals, and spices the whole melange with vivid portraits of Taiwan's various non-herp fauna, both human and otherwise.

I enjoyed the book in the same way that I've enjoyed Kauffeld's classic tomes, as well as Dick Bartlett's and a few others since then, and I would rank it in that esteemed company without reservation.

If you're into herp books on any level, you cannot pass this one by.

Anyone and everyone on FHF should be reading this. It reminds me of Gerald Durrell's great earlier books, but is even funnier and considerably more snakey. This is the most entertaining collection of field helping stories I have ever read. Hans, I will preorder your Borneo book just as soon as you hint that you might write one.

It's a great honor to be mentioned in the same sentence with Gerry D. He's been my hero since I was eight, and I have to admit I really did try to channel his spirit a little when I wrote the book. Glad to hear you think I might have pulled it off :-)

Hans ... just got your book and am still reading it. So far it is a good read. I love the description of your son on his first sighting of a cobra as a "hummingbird on meth."

Thank you - it would be an honor! Just the other day I took three herpers from Hong Kong roadcruising in Sarawak, and around midnight, over bad coffee in some godforsaken bush village, they suddenly pulled three copies of my book from their bags and asked me very politely - almost shyly - to please sign them. They had lugged them all the way from Hong Kong to Borneo just so I could put my Herbie Hancock on the flyleaf!! I was VERY touched.

I'm about 100 pages in. It's a great book.

I'm sure you'll recognize the island on the ND (Navigational Display) Hans! It's kinda cool to read this at 37,000 ft and look down at the island where it all happened.

RCTP is Taipei airport and RCKH is Kaohsiung. This is on our flight from Bangkok to Tokyo.

I'm looking forward to finishing it on todays flight to LAX.

Awesome, Lou, just awesome. Thank you very much for this hilarious and touching reply, Lou - you certainly made my day and that of my two boys ("How can he read a book while flying such a huge plane? He must be a super pilot!"). It's even more touching as I'm currently back on the island to celebrate Chinese New Year with my family.

PS: I still owe you a proper reply to your mail!!!!

Happy Year of the Horse, everyone!!

Just got a copy in the mail, Hans.

Once I am done with Stalking the Plumed Serpent by D. Bruce Means, I will get wrapped up with your Asian herp tales!
