Panasonic FZ150

Post by MaartenSFS »

I just bought this camera two days ago and have been very impressed with it thus far. I think it may be the perfect portable and affordable herping camera for stills and video. The very usuable optical range, quick autofocus (and manual focus, which I haven't had a chance to try out yet), image and video quality, image stabilisation, etc. are all top notch. I will, of course, back up that statement with photographic evidence as the weather warms up. I have heard that macro is excellent, but have yet to test it on something. The photos of birds that I have seen people take with the FZ150 are amazing.

If anyone else has this camera feel free to chime in. ;)

After two months of using the camera I bring you images:

I find that the camera takes very detailled, well-exposed photos and has a myriad of options to get really creative. I think that I will never need or be willing to carry anything larger than this camera into the field with me. Herp photos will come as I take them.

You still like the camera?

In the past I was happy with something like a Canon SX120, but now I'm looking to upgrade in both macro and low light shot image quality. On a bit of a budget, I'm really looking for something I can get on sale for $300 or cheaper - which is quite a bit higher than I've previously been willing to go, but I finally got tired of my cheaper cameras just not doing what I had hoped for them to do. (Unfortunately they also seem to get stolen or broken at regular intervals...hoping I can somehow break that trend with a pricier camera...recipe for disaster...oh well.) Can anyone recommend where I should go between:

Canon SX50
Canon SX40
Panasonic ZS50
Panasonic ZS40
Panasonic FZ150
Panazonic FZ200

or something else?

Some of the models are discontinued in the U.S., it appears. Maybe you'd be able to pick up one of those cheaply. It looks like the Panasonic FZ200 is well-liked by users; received a pretty good rating.

I have the ZS40... not great in low light. I keep the ISO at 200 or lower. Macro is OK, but coming from the DSLR world, I'll only use the small 1/2.3" (6.17 x 4.55 mm) sensor camera in a pinch.
