Just some neat data

Post by Don Becker »

These are "heat maps" based on the day of the year. We really do love to herp in April and May don't we?

This one is for all records

Can you run queries based on fields other than date; for example, species, age, temp, elevation, etc?

Yes, it's by date just because it's a calendar based heat map. The script was just a start, and only does by date right now, but it could be made to run for specific species or regions. I don't see how age, temp, and elevation would fit into the calendar format, but yeah, charts and graphs could be made from those things as well.

That is cool.

It would be interesting to see that for different regions of the country. I suspect there would be significant differences.

Pretty cool. In the Northeast you would definitely see a spike in April and May after a long, herpless winter.

Our March records might show high heat too with everyone rushing out for Spring migration.

It's funny to see that we apparently think it is important to get that first herp of the year as well. January 1 is the busiest day in January.

I know that in Cali, we always have some kind of Jan 1st data kick off, and people want to get the points in the contribution cards for the first 2013 county records....

The SC Chapter's New Year's Day Challenge helped boost last year's numbers (even with the cold front freezing out most of the region). I'm sure if a few other chapter's implemented similar challenges, that number could go through the roof. I'd image the SE & California chapters in particular could really add to the total.
