Entering record of shed skin?

Post by zwhitman »

I was in the field last week and I found a complete freshly shed skin (still wet), but could not find its owner. By the size, color, and head scalation I can positively ID it as belonging to a black racer. The only other possibly confusing species in the area would be a back rat snake and the scales were definitely not keeled. I have a voucher pic of the head scales. Could I enter this in the database or live/dead specimens only?

I would only enter it if you can capture enough of the features to identify the shed in photos. While rat snakes do have keeled scales, they are usually weakly keeled (and even absent laterally).

Can you post a few photos here?
