Re: Panamanian Poison Frog Research '09 - Pic Intensive
I wondered this myself, but I know virtually nothing about their ecology. Do males typically defend a single bromeliad? Or would it actually increase the reproductive success of males capable of defending multiple "bromeliads" in a single area? TH Typically, males will defend a small terr...

Re: Panamanian Poison Frog Research '09 - Pic Intensive
I only looked at the Isla Colon population, which does appear to be rearing site limited. Mo Donnelly did some similar work in 1989 at La Selva, and found similar results (large reactions to rearing site addition). I would guess the species, as a whole, is probably rearing site limited, although, it...

Panamanian Poison Frog Research '09 - Pic Intensive
I did my masters on the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog (Oophaga pumilio) in Bocas del Toro, Panama summers '09 and '10. I got the opportunity to go down in 2007 to see the system and start some research on the frogs, and while there, I decided that I wanted to look deeper into what goes on with the pol...

Re: Are these FIELD HERPERS?
I agree with Dell. And I'm not ashamed to say I enjoyed Steve Irwin. Steve Irwin is, in large part, the reason why I am pursuing a degree studying herps. Like him or hate him, it is undeniable that he brought more attention and appreciation to the things "that crawl," according to Linnaeu...

Re: My Snake Road Trip
HUH? A very well respected herper on this forum also agreed with me, these aren't Bird Voiced. I'm not trying to be a jerk by any means. I'm not sure why you thought it was ok to drop an F bomb in a kids thread? Then have the audacity to say that I'm being rude? I have pics that I can post when I'm...

Re: My Snake Road Trip
Very nice! Jealous of a number of the finds, and looking forward to a visit this weekend. I stopped by for an hour on friday and in that hour, I found 4 Western Ribbons, 1 Southern Black Racer, 1 Rough Green, 1 Eastern Garter (5 feet up a tree, which was probably the strangest find), 1 Cottonmouth, ...

Re: Recommendations for Northern MS?
Anyone?
I know that asking for herping spots is a little taboo for obvious reasons, so I definitely don't need any sort of specifics. General areas would be awesome. At the moment, I have no idea where to even start around here!

Re: Borneo Dispatches #9: Jungle Medley 1 (Bonus Flying Lemu
ribbit, if you've never run into rich skanks you're missing out  Is skank a common name for that group of lizards over there or was it a typo? I didn't want to say anything at first but other people already have. But I don't know what common local names are in use outside my little part of the...

Re: Snake Road Question
I can understand not carrying potential snake containers... But walking without my hook takes a little fun out of it. It's like an extra finger for poking around.... I mean, presume me innocent first OK, LE ? I agree. A large number of people go there to look for the snakes, and I guess I'm of the ...

Re: Herping in Borneo
According to the guide I have, E. caeruleocauda occur on the islands to the east of Sabah. I guess it hasn't been recorded on the mainland of Borneo. But given how it would appear as though distributions of a lot of the species are poorly know, I take such with a grain of salt. I did look at Lipinia...

Recommendations for Northern MS?
I just moved to Oxford to start up a PhD program, and I'd really like to get out and regularly do some herping in the area, but I don't quite know where to go around here. Does anyone have suggestions? I'm planning on doing Snake Road in IL in springs and falls, but I'd like to find some spots a lit...

Re: Herping in Borneo
Excellent photography! Welcome to the FHF. Your Cerberus rhynchops is actually Enhydris plumbea (or possibly Gerarda prevostiana if that was taken in the mangroves, hard to tell without seeing the head a little more clearly) - another member of the fascinating homalopsid family. Thanks! I wasn't qu...

Re: Herping in Borneo
Thanks for the welcome. I've been meaning to fill in more on my herping trips as I've got a number of them. I just am active on a number of forums, and in addition to doing research and all, I've just not had time. But hopefully I will be able to update more frequently. I just moved to Mississippi f...

Herping in Borneo
I'm new here, but am more avidly getting into methodically doing field herping (I always have been, but I find myself finding more excuses to go out and try to find some stuff). So I figured I'd share some herps from Borneo. I spent basically the month of August leading a study abroad program to Bor...
