Re: Your worst piece of camera gear

I once owned a Nikon series E 50mm f1.8 which was the worst lens I ever had. Super low contrast and terrible flare. I got it used, (it came with a camera body I wanted), so I'm guessing there was something wrong with it since lots of people really rave about that lens. A couple years ago I had to se...

Re: Tripod

I think your best bet for a relatively cheap, yet still adequately sturdy tripod might be one of the Manfrotto models. Years ago before I switched to Gitzo I owned a Bogen (now Manfrotto) 3021. It was sturdy enough for a 300mm lens, came almost to my eye level, and you could remove most of the cente...

Re: frog/toad ID needed

Josh,

They are Anaxyrus woodhousei. The metamorphs have those red spots and you really can't see the paratoids at that age. Described habitat and time of year help with the ID here as well.

Re: How to Photograph Snakes at Night?

Hans, I'm slightly confused, (par for the course really). If you are taking a picture at night and flash is your only light source then you can use any shutter speed you want, so long as it is no faster than the maximum flash synch speed of your camera. Also, if the flash is the only source of light...

Re: Question about 1:1

This gets complicated. There are many factors involved. For example the 180 is physically longer than the 90. So if the distance is measured from the front of the lens (working distance) you will lose some because the front of the 180 is further from the image plane than the front of the 90. Also, d...

Re: Last couple weeks in New Mexico

That's really cool about the black tail rattler. You should find some defining feature about it and record it and see if it is actually the same snake coming back to the same spot annually. Actually the snake has an old injury to the right supraocular scale that allows me yo know it is the same ind...

Last couple weeks in New Mexico

I was going to hold off until I had a few more finds to do a post, but we are trying to get the site going again I'll go ahead and post what I've got now. First up is a gopher snake found crossing a dirt road in Valencia county, http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l313/bgorum/Gorum_100523_2038.jpg htt...
