Re: need help to ID exotic toad

I agree with the Anaxyrus [Bufo] americanus ID. There is no doubt as to its ID. That particular individual, however, appears to have greatly exaggerated tubercles. This could be a genetic mutation or a mishap in development. The cranial crests are dead-on for americanus , and match the specimens Jus...

I'm with Crocdoc on the bird ID - the "loud, buzzing" bird is a Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor). Cool animals that make a crazy noise as they dive.

Very cool. Were you far from the Borader? As for the density, I'd agree with you that they aren't denning, yet. What was the rodent population like in that area? I've got a few spots in my area that have fantastic Crotalus density... and an AMAZING rodent population. Also, this time of year, the fem...

Fantastic post!

Your scorpion is a Centruroides gracilis. I second Travis on the"vinegaroon" being an Amblypygid and the tarantula being a Brachypelma. Maybe B. sabulosum?

Re: help with tiger salamander larvae

Bill, In my experience, mealworms are typically ignored by the larvae. Try earthworms or frozen fish foods (Bloodworms, Krill, Amphipods, etc.), which are available at many pet shops. Freeze dried Tubifex sometimes work, too. I'd also suggest that you keep an eye on the aquatic plant soil - many bra...

Re: Some highlights from 2010 so far. Lots of pics.

Brian, MT is relatively "unexplored" in a herpetological sense. That said, Liochlorophis is known only from the extreme northeastern corner of the state, near the ND state line and the Canadian Border. Most of this habitat is flat or gently rolling grassland with minor badlands/breaks type...

Brian,

That was poor wording (=mindlessness) on my part. What I meant was, I find it intersting that you see Rubber Boas and Smooth Greens together in UT. The two are found on opposite ends of the state here in MT. Sorry for the confusion!

Very cool little animal, you have there! It's likely a hatchling from the fall of 2009, since triangulum eggs have not yet begun to hatch for this year. If the "morphologically challenged" question the identity of that snake, take photos of its anal plate (which will be single) and that of...

Puerto Rico - May, 2010

Well, I did it… I got married to a beautiful lady in mid-May of this year. For our honey moon, we decided on Puerto Rico. Pseudacris maculata and Anaxyrus [Bufo] cognatus breeding last night. In fact, it was the first cognatus chorus I've heard all year! Spea bombifrons spawned on Father's Day. Typically, I hear Lithobates [Rana] pippiens on warm nights all summer long, up here.

Scorpion = Vaejovis carolinianus, as previously suggested. It's the only native species in your area. Centruroides vittatus has been introduced in a number of areas of the Southeast, especially near BBQ restaurants.
