Re: First Quarter Report

Steve - I think ringtails can be locally common in parts of their range. They are nocturnal and pretty sneaky so they're not frequently encountered. Seeing it was the highlight of my trip. It was a gorgeous animal.

Shoot me a message when you want to visit KY. I'd be happy to show you around.

Sure Matt. If you plan on using your leftover bait you'll need to keep it iced all day. Mullet develop an unappetizing texture (read: turn to mush) quickly in the Southern heat. To clean them cut off the heads and gut them. Leave the scales on and cut the fish in half down the middle leaving the spi...

Re: Plethodon glutinosus complex question

As Kevin said the cranial morphology really does differ between the two species. Once you've seen several of each side by side the longer snout, flatter head and bigger eyes of P. kentucki becomes apparent. I also see a difference in body form. The distance between the front and hind limbs relative ...

Shark taste excellent when prepared properly. You bleed them right after capture and let the steaks soak in ice water for a couple day, periodically changing the water. The meat has a firm, flaky texture and a mild flavor. They are high in mercury, but so is tuna. Many species of shark have experien...

First Quarter Report

I’ve been impressed with all the great content posted here recently.  I thought I’d chip in with some of my findings from the first quarter of this year.  My first herp of the year was a queen snake on an odd warm day in early January in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky: http://farm8.staticflickr.co...

The stuff probably works like the powdered snake repellents; fumes prevent the animal from sticking around an area where the chemical is applied. Small creek chubs can vary greatly in pattern but I've noticed many have an orangish tinge to their fins like that specimen.
