Re: My FIRST in situ photographs - POST YOURS
Though not my first in situ Eastern Diamondback, this is one of my favorites. Hiked up this EDB last year. This animal was just doing its thing, maybe waiting for a prey item to come by. She was initially coiled in the middle of our path. We took photos and moved on. When we came back by an hour or ...

My year has gotten off to a slow start, as I have just been too busy to get out much. In January, I managed a few hiking outings. John, I lived in CA for a couple years, and we would often go hiking in the early morning, setting out when it was still chilly. Upon reaching our destination, which was frequently the American River, we would often see northern pacifics just outside rock crevices basking - both babies and adults. ~...

Everyone here has made all the necessary points, and they are all correct. Handling rattlesnakes is selfish if not done specifically to obtain scientific evidence. You simply cannot justify it. It is not good for you, or the animal. I used to handle also, everything from big cobras to eastern diamon...

Early morning. Similar to your evenings, I find 30 mins before sunrise to about an hour after sunrise work well for upland and flatwoods snakes and legless lizards. I have never had much luck cruising in the mornings. A long time ago, I heard that the "dew burn" was the time to cruise - b...

No need for tongs IMO. You should be proficient enough with a hook, and there is less risk of injuring the animal. I agree with Trey. My mentor back when I was just learning to handle hots told me the same thing. I have never owned a pair of tongs and don't plan to. If the snake gets away, oh well....
