I looked through Matt's post here http://www.fieldherpforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=22489 (why is this not a sticky?) I think I have all of them IDed correctly, but one I'm not sure about, so I'll put it first. What the heck is this? http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j122/captainjack0000/...

Thank you. I'm hoping to have a good July and August too. I wish you good luck as well. I've been cruising Timber country around here like crazy and haven't had any luck. It had been dry for a while, but now it seems like the rains are picking up, which has been good for the frogs. I have a lot on m...

This is the first I've heard of this. I've seen during the day anyway many times where there are just a fences or stakes with ribbon set up around a turtle nest. The beach is still open, you just are not to disturb the nest. I've never been to a beach to see fireworks and I don't know what type of l...

Re: Need a frog I.D.
If it isn't a squirrel tree frog, I would say either a southern or upland chorus frog. Peepers can be variable, but they frequently have an X pattern on their back, even if it is rather light. These other Pseudacris species frequntly have dark markings on their back and can be variable. Does anybody...

Re: Need a frog I.D.
Well...being down here in Florida I'm not sure how much help I can offer. My first guess would be a fairly young squirrel tree frog; or at the least a Hyla spp. But it also may be a chorus frog of some variety. The toe pads, size of the frog, etc eliminate Ranids, right?

Re: Smokies trip and questions
The rule I've heard is to flip things in a manner so the escape route is away from you, in the event it is a venomous snake. You do this by putting the rock or log between you and the animal when you lift it, and it can kinda double as a shield. But I've also experienced that doing it this way makes...

Yeah the water levels were way down, to the point it was a creek this winter. I wonder if that has anything to do with the siren population. I've been there a few times this year and have yet to turn up any sirens, only dwarf salamanders and now a newt. Here are some of my pics from the day w/ Matt....

It's also worth pointing out that oak (especially live oak, vs deciduous oak) leaf litter doesn't carry fire well at all. Yes, I saw this first hand. The waxy coating on the leaves meant they didn't even really get singed. The other thing to mention here was that the preserve property has a very hi...

I have my issues with ashy geckos always being listed as 'non-native' or exotic. From what I understand, they've always been found in (at least) the lower Keys and there is no real specific point at which one can identify as their origin there. I've never been clear why it is assumed they are non-n...

I think the best description I've heard of South Florida is when somebody said it was like a giant pet shop. There are many, many exotic and non-native species running around down there. Hey everybody. My cravings for salamanders usually subsides as spring rolls around and the prospect of road cruising for snakes takes over. But this year my interest in them has not gone away.
