The Gopher snake in hand is well done with the flash fall off. I like that one, along with the spadefoot. The Scorpion is pretty cool as well, but I don't think you're going to win hearts at a County Fair with the inverts. I would say the Toad is your best bet for winning.

I have found in my juvenile bins, that if the substrate is deep enough, flex watt on the back can be set at higher setting, creating a broader band of warm temperature options usable to the snakes, which labyrinth positions of favor in the sub. If you're needing a tripod just for the Smart phone, I would say look into the Gorilla pod. I have one, it won't support my DSLR, but certainly would a point and shoot or a phone. I just caught a Bull in the neighbors yard the other day. I usually get at least one a year, but up to 5. More often than not I'm picking up fresh DOR from 3 houses away... This is an attractive animal I'll have to put pics of the one I shot pics of.

Find any water ways. It's going to be hot and won't be the ideal time to herp to be honest. It can be a productive area, but this isn't a good time. Creeks, Rivers and lakes will be the best bet, if not going out when the temps come down at night or early mornings.

I have the Fenix HP 30. It's just nuts. I don't use the highest setting except to show it off. I can see the tops of trees bright and clear. If you're one of the road cruising crew that would be a good lamp as it's brighter than headlights on bright. It's heavy, bulky and awkward but it's so bright...

I agree with putting locations out, it's a bad idea in general. The Western Massassaugas are quite common out West. I don't think they're listed at all. If they are then I've been incredibly lucky to have found so many.

There's good herping in Kansas to be sure. I would contact the Kansas Herp Society. They are some of the nicest people I've herped with. Someone should be willing to hook you up with some local knowledge so that you can maybe find some Milks, Worm Snakes, Speckled Kings, Horridus, or something cool....
