Awesome finds and photos. That's A LOT of hiking to find that many klaubs. Any pyros? As to the bite, that's really scary stuff if you start getting hives distant from the bite site. Consider carrying some Benadryl and an Epi-pen with you in the field in the future. Your doctor can write a prescript...

Yoloherper, Your incredulousness is understandable. These snakes were found over close to 40 years of dedicated CA herping and many thousands of snake encounters total. Those garters were beasts. I found them on a hot June day in 1993--I remember the day because I drove to Gilroy to apply for a job after my senior year in high school. Most were "informally" measured in the field. For many snake lengths, I use my shoe---yeah, not as scientific as restraining the snake and tracing the outline, but it gets it done in the field. Some were formally measured, like the rosy boa, captive zonata, Santa Cruz zonata, and San Diego...

The Carolinas can be rough in June/July. Brutally hot in the daytime, which severely limits herp activity. EARLY morning walking and road cruising until 10-11 can produce herps, from 11 until LATE afternoon/evening, you either want to just rest or be in shaded moist/riparian areas. You can spend the...

The ONLY way your boards won't get flipped by others is if you put them out yourself, HIDE them very well, and don't take anyone else there or tell anyone else about them.
