Very interesting habitat! It appears that natrix natrix more often occurs as its melanistic form in the north of Europe than it does in the south? Could this be an adaptation to capturing more heat in the colder climate? Very plausible and even likely. Also, the yellow neck blotches have been shown...

It is amazing to me that anyone could have a successful herping trip to an area whose latitude is north of Juneau, Alaska and most of the Hudson Bay, Canada. Very cool....literally!
