Re: The MOST bitchenist looking herp?

Ditto on the Mangshan pit viper. I hope they glow at night when you hit them with a spot light like a chameleon. Otherwise I am not going out at night there. I think I will stay inside during the day too come to think of it. :)

Re: Herp Nation LIVE - "Viewpoint - Licensed to herp" --VIDE

The box check was also floated as a way to assess who is purchasing their license to herp. Either that or a stamp with a fee would be fine by me. I also like the idea of a take record or a voluntary online form to report what you observe and take as this provides data on the other side. I originally...

Re: Energy cost of producing venom

Physiologically, venom probably isn't any more "expensive" to produce than saliva. What an ignorant statement. How so? Intuitively venom is just a mix of proteins so should not be any more costly energy wise than making enzymes in saliva or the GI tract. In fact those are good analogies s...

Re: Nice Cerb observation

The problem is so much of whats being said or rationalized, is all assumption. You hope they will move and all is fine. That is an assumption that is proving very wrong. Check out any one of many relocation studies. That is absolutely hilarious Frank considering you are the one making assumptions. ...

Re: Not true Rich

I do have a clue. in Fact lots of clues. In the cases I have looked at, if they are disturbed enough, they leave the normal reproductive behaviors that they have practiced for years. A few radio tagged were found dead. Most telemetry studies pull the radios, and the herpers leave. end of that story...

Re: Nice Cerb observation

Frank -- So what you are pushing here is the precautionary principal. You really have no clue as to what is happening to the animals after they change their behavior but because they changed their behavior it is obviously bad for them.

Re: Nice Cerb observation

No we do not know the entire effects we are causing or behaviors of the animals we hold dear. But by taking specific important behaviors(denning/gestation as examples) and testing them, we can see that under certain conditions and at certain times, interfering with them is potentially very harmful....

Re: Nice Cerb observation

Fish and Game departments are tricky. They are basically funded by hunting/fishing licenses (and guns and bullets, etc), so they have a responsibility to protect the interests of their "bosses," the sportsmen. It is much cheaper to say "you can't collect hognose" than to hire a ...

Re: Nice Cerb observation

First I was not asking for data, simply what you were measuring that allowed you to draw the conclusions you have presented here regarding casual interactions having detrimental impacts on snakes and specifically pregnant crotes. From your review of your research on the montane crotes I deduce that ...

Re: Nice Cerb observation

Again thanks for the great post. Your right about the tangible habitat destruction, but what I think People like PL and I are saying is, the intangible pressures like yours are accumilative. That is, its not just your one event, but many many such events. As we mentioned, each one of you act if you...

Re: Wild caught albinos???

jonathan -- my pic of the amelanistic Pacific gopher was taken many years after her capture. She was a YOY when I found her as were the other 2 found in that area. Being diurnal to crepuscular with high surface activity, I doubt an amel gopher has much chance of reaching maturity.

Angolosaurus skoogi - desert plated lizard -- easy to see but a pain in the but to catch. At 50 yards they see you and dive into the slip face of the dune.
