Re: RIP Robert Stebbins
One would hope this news made it further than just the California chapter. I was lucky enough to spend a day with Dr. Stebbins looking for salamanders in the Gabes about 20 years ago. Still the highlight of my herping life. Somewhere along the way I've misplaced that picture of us taken that day. Ti...

I'd imagine many more snakes would survive the first encounter if they weren't temporary stunned, stuck, or injured to the point that it hindered their mobility. I'm sure the second hit gets many of them. I once picked up an adult splendida that I was sure was a goner, only to find it was much impro...

Re: Cross country road trip advice
Once you get to California, a drive around some spots at the Salton Sea may be worth a visit. You should be able to pick up Yellow-footed Gull that time of year. Joshua Tree is just north of the 10. Once you get to the coast, two places to check out are Newport Back-bay and Bolsa Chica Preserve. The...

Funny you should mention this. I just returned from a trip(up Saturday back Sunday) up to San Jose to visit a very, very, very, ill relative. From Grapevine to HWY 152 on the 5(about 200 miles?) I estimate I saw about 200 DOR's, and these were just the ones big enough to confirm as snakes. Some were...

Never be afraid to ask for help. Birders are usually willing to help out a newbie, since we were one once, and may always be. A good birder is not afraid to let a bird go unidentified when they don't get a good look. Good luck.
