Re: Bought vs Homemade
There's often a lot of talk of Stump Rippers vs. other hooks. I've had several Stump Rippers in my hand and I have to say they are probably better suited for lifting AC, than my O'shea hook is. Having said that, I think the quality and sturdiness is as good in either case. And Midwest.com is easier...

So far the lists appear to be comparing apples to oranges, as some are listing subspecies and some are not. Chrish does not, and even so, he list is the most impressive.

Re: Worlds farthest northern most documented herp?
The first herp that comes to mind is Lacerta vivipara (well, shoot, I just saw that they're now in the genus Zootoca); they have been found north of the Arctic Circle.
There might be an amphibian that'll give the lizard a run for its money, though.

You really need a better, more focussed picture of the front of the shell, just behind the head, to see if they are spiny or smooth. Yeah - the only way that would have happened would have been if one of those last two were facing me. They were the only turtles the whole time that weren't on the op...

I wouldn't necessarily say the head is THAT much smaller than the body; I hypothesize there is a degree of disortion of perspective due to the camera.

I'd rather not see it. I'm not a scientist, I'm a hobbyist. And most DORs I've seen locally are rattlers and bull snakes with long-nose snakes thrown in during early spring. I know they occur, and I really really don't want to see them squished and dead on the road/shoulder :( Especially for the TX...

Sampling was extremely heavy during and immediately after the cold snap, and though carcasses were scavenged, vertebrae were still left. Also, the Everglade...

Sheds don't work too well. I had a skin and a shed mounted like this (both crotalus) and besides thickness and texture it was hard to tell which was which. They were both from a guy in Florida who used DOR's and sheds off his captives. In the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" sense--it wo...

If such handling is bad for the animal, it doesn't ma...
