Re: Catalina Island Zonata

Pretty neat. The video and caption describing the approach to the snake sheds much light on the discovery. The fox, itself was quick and decisive, leaving little time to prevent the kill. Thanks for posting the video. If anyone is interested in the Holder 1910 account (pp. 194), email me (fieldnotes...

Re: Catalina Island Zonata

I question the validity of the encounter. It could have been Joe Blow or even myself that encountered this snake and I would respect a person more for asking questions. No one should mindlessly accept a record based on who said what. I question notes from Hubbs and other world-class herpers, and eve...

Re: Catalina Island Zonata

How inconvenient being snatched up by a fox near Avalon. Pretty tame fox to be so bold, is that fox routinely fed or what? Is it too much to presume that someone of Mr. Desertworx's caliber would be aware of such a snake's value, as something more than a simple-reptile snack? Science is full of ques...

Before Chytrid Fungus and Bulldozers, drought was the greatest threat to amphibians. Ephemeral ponds often dry, killing thousands of metamorphosing Tiger Salamanders, Western Toads, Red-legged Frogs, and others. Over the eons those species have adapted to drought or paid the price. Christmas is a good time for exploring the Redwoods. Being next to the coast, the low elevation forests never get too cold and by December everything is usually soaked. You should be able to find pretty much everything you'd like, minus some reptiles.
