Re: Herping on Catalina Island
For those that are interested, the USGS (Fisher et al) did a substantial pit-trapping study on the SoCal island. It has pictures of some of the herps, including a zonata. You may be able to scrounge-up the paper via the net.

Re: Price of saving Arroyo Toad article
Thanks Rich. I took a quick look at the article, and the authors acknowledge that the dollar figure listed could be hugely different.
Our California chapter will have additional opportunities to survey for the presence of Arroyo toads in SD county in the future. And, we're FREE !

Re: Horned toads in Verdugo Mtns
I am pleasantly surprised that someone from DFG approached NAFHA to get those records. That staffer deserves to be applauded. Schell, it went the other way - we approached them. But they readily engaged us, and provided a list of taxon where they were data-deficient. We responded by releasing the r...

Re: Horned toads in Verdugo Mtns
Ah, but there IS something we can do, and we did it last year! The Ca DFG is in the process of revising the SSC list; part of the process was a request for data. The CA NAFHA chapter contacted them, and we released several hundred records from the database to help the DFG make more informed decision...

Re: Southern Alligator Lizard at 6700 feet?
Will, it was a long time ago. I have a photo of the critter in the pine needles, but no other records. I was with my daughter, so I'm sure we didn't descend more than a few hundred feet - it may well have been right around 8000'.

Found one once at the top of tram in Palm Springs. Not sure what the elevation is, but I think it's at least 7000'.

Re: excuse my ignorance, but what the heck is this?
Thanks guys. Hognose was my first guess, but the pattern didn't look like what I'm used to seeing, and it seemed pretty big (guess I need to expand my world beyond the West!). It was found in the last couple days; I can see where it looks like it might have just laid eggs. Good timing on her part!

Wow, thanks again Sam! I'm going to print that diagram and carry it with me. I now see where the tail on my tad is fairly long; the eyes are a little difficult for me to judge with the angle of the picture, but I'll know what to look for now.

Re: Camouflage
Sam, this is a timely post, since I took this shot this morning as was unsure as to the species. I think it's an arroyo? - in the San Pasqual Valley. I know what boreas looks like, but i wondered if perhaps this was Pseudacris.

Off the hook fantastic! The headshot of the lyre is gorgeous, and the composition of the coastal boa on the road is stunning. Just great stuff!

Re: An oldie but goodie - 11 days to the Hurricane Bank
Thanks Tim! The gear is half the fun with this type of fishing. Catching big tuna stand-up style from an anchored boat is a dicey proposition, and everything needs to be top-notch for the angler to have success. They're big, mean fish, and it's not at all clear who will win once the battle begins. I...

It'll be fun, and HOT! One year in June we made the mistake of putting our mahi on the pavement for a few minutes while we gathered our gear....managed to start cooking it!can't wait for later this month.... fishing & herping in Cabo San Lucas..
