Re: For those who have found red salamanders
I'm in fairfax county, where reds supposedly exist on the range maps but no one I've talked to has found one here. I've tried the monongahela national forest in WV, as well as various parts of Shenandoah NP. Hoping to try smoky mountains sometime. I have found spring salamanders in WV - are they com...

For those who have found red salamanders
Can you provide some sort of habitat shot where you have found them? Localities would be nice, but since they are frowned upon here, I would just like to see if I have been looking for them in the right looking habitat in Northern VA, Shenandoah, and West VA, which so far have yielded some great sal...

Re: The State of Nature TV
Well stated CrocDoc. Fans can get so caught up in their heroes that they become God like. They think any talk of them being wrong is blasphemy . Example after my comments on Steve's death to CNN I received death threats and threats to burn down he zoo from some of his fans. Some still get pissed wh...

Re: The State of Nature TV
Thanks for the clarification on that statement. I'm not sure if you were implying that Irwin influenced you to get into keeping reptiles as pets (the corn snake and beardie), but he would have hated that. He was notoriously against the private keeping/ownership of reptiles. Where did you get that f...

If I may, a shameless plug - my blog!
Hey guys, I hope this is allowed in the forum, but I thought I'd try to expand my blog's readership a bit (it's rather pitiful, to be honest!). It's mainly oriented towards my friends and family who read it through my facebook posts, to give a little basic understanding of what I love and what I do,...

Re: The State of Nature TV
Because I have a bit of insomnia tonight, and I dont have any early classes tomorrow morning, I will humor this conversation once more because I've been browsing pics here tonight anyway. In any case I've been in more heated forum debates, it's not like I can't handle this. Crocdoc, you are nitpicki...

Re: The State of Nature TV
Aaaaand thats why it's a sore spot. Cynical people love nothing more than to pick at anything negative and destroy any hope of a positive outlook in someone else. Ie: I tell you he is a childhood role model of mine, present a respectful argument (quite politely I might add), and without attacking a ...

Re: The State of Nature TV
I might add that as a more mature individual than I was ten years ago, I recognize the criticisms and the fact that I practically worshipped the man in elementary school, the does NOT mean his handling techniques translated to me or others in my generation who belong to his audience. Born idiots run...

Re: The State of Nature TV
Criticism of Steve tends to hit a sore spot for me, and I usually avoid long, controversial forum posts, but alas, here I am. I'm nineteen and in college at Christopher Newport University. I've volunteered for 4 years (over 400 hours) at my local nature center caring for reptiles as well as giving e...

Re: Snake hook question
I've gotten some mixed answers, so I'm going try a more direct question. Out of all the hooks Midwest offers at tongs.com, which is the best for my situation, if I had to pick one, possibly with some compromises? I will almost exclusively encounter rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths for the...

Re: Snake hook question
Ideally I would be able to flip things and handle snakes, at least enough to move out in the open for a photograph or to help one get off a road safely. I just don't understand what it is about a collapsible or standard type hook that doesn't allow for flipping things. I'm also hoping to get this so...

Re: Snake hook question
Also, is this hook (http://tongs.com/professionalfieldhook.aspx) not intended for actual snake handling? They rave about the strength of it for flipping things, but it doesnt look like it would hold an angry rattlesnake as well as their standard hooks.

So does the thing just break in half if you use it to flip a log, or what? (The collapsible)

Snake hook question
Hey guys, I was planning on getting myself a little birthday present in the form of my first snake hook from Midwest Tongs. I was hoping to get a collapsible hook for easy traveling, but on the site it says not to use the collapsible versions of standard hooks for flipping over logs and debris. Why ...

I know this topic is super old... But I took that exact same picture, the one with the big stone face on the Mayan ruins. Went there as a kid and took the same shot! That place was crawling with Ctenosaura

Re: Herping suggestions for New Orleans? - Needed FAST!
What about a National Wildlife Refuge, do the same rules apply?
I did find two places I have in mind, Bogue Chitto and Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuges. Anyone been there, or recommend any particular trails in either of them?

Herping suggestions for New Orleans? - Needed FAST!
I'm here in New Orleans visiting family, but I would hate to leave without herping first. Does anyone know of a State/National park within a reasonable (1 1/2 hours tops) drive from the city? Looking for a place with a good amount of solid ground, not too swampy but swampy enough to see some gators ...
