Snake ID? (Darien, Panama)
Found this snake in a Google search but can't seem to find an ID. Does any body with experience in South America recognize this snake? To me it looks like an Erythrolamprus but does not resemble any photos I have seen of E. bizona or E. mimus which are usually the only two listed for Panama from wha...

You won't see "a lot" of racers on Pelee island due to the fact that there numbers are declining and probably at an all time low. Over a few days of searching you would be lucky to find one. I remember reading that there are only around 200 racers left on the island. Considering their arbo...

I'll have to give that a try! There just so happens to be a lot of bridges around here that are in Fox snake range too. It makes sense that it would be a good place to escape the heat of the day and keep warm at night. It's obviously not going to be far from water either!

Depending on where in the body you count the scales you may get a different number. Also some species can vary a bit and I wouldn't be surprised if Eastern Garters are one of those. For Butlers' I think the yellow stripe is centered on the third scale row. It is very distinct when you see one in per...

It includes good keys and photos for almost all of the reptiles so can be very helpful for IDing, but there is otherwise very little writing for most species. I have had friends give me a very similar description of a black snake with a bright orange belly that was as long as they were tall (as kids). This was about a 2 hour drive west of Fort Erie. Yes you should be there for the first few months of the rainy season. The area around the canal is always warm and dries up quick with a day or two of sun so lots of rain shouldn't hurt. You should also be in some very prestine habitat so that can't hurt either. I don't know too much about BCI itsel...

Whomper = Fox snake on Lake Erie (Long Point Region, Canada). The term is also synonymous with a large water snake since most fishermen can't differentiate. "The really big ones are the Whompers!"

Check the area again where you found the shed skin. I don't often see shed skin in Panama but when I do there area almost always snakes nearby.
