Re: What was your last lifer?...
Spent another enjoyable morning at Lake Erie today in Cleveland, OH. Found a state-lifer (#291 for Ohio): http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq131/swamp_ratter/EaredGrebewh_zpsd6e3d655.jpg Eared Grebe , picked out among the common Horned Grebes. And while not a lifer, this guy was entertaining birde...

Re: What was your last lifer?...
Agree with Andy. Lake Erie is absolutely amazing. I also missed a little gull yesterday...and it was seen again today. Good job on the RT loon, Andy. I've never seen a harlequin, either. Our AC/refrigerant guy at the family business is a hunter, and he shot a female/imm. harlequin off Cleveland last...

Andy, Cool, I should have called! Yeah, the Red-throated was at Sunset Park and the scoters at Sims. The pelican was my first new bird in the state since 2010...haven't been birding much as of late. I think you're going to get that loon real soon, Andy. Now's the time! And I'm jealous of that Pacifi...

Re: What was your last lifer?...
Excellent shot with that white-throated sparrow! I haven't been keeping a life list for years now, but I have been keeping an Ohio-only list. I found my 290th species in Ohio today, a Brown Pelican that has been present along the Lake Erie shoreline since summer. I then went on to miss would-be Ohio...

Re: Unidentifed birds from Borneo
I don't know what they are for sure, as I do not own a field guide to the birds of Borneo, but here are my guesses:
Yellow-bellied Prinia
Blue Flycatcher (Pale Blue Flycatcher or Borneo Blue Flycatcher??)
Just tossing that out there!

Re: looking at getting a macro lens
Sigma and Tamron, as well as Tokina, make high-quality macro lenses as well. I'd just go for the Canon 100mm f/2.8 (the non-L, non-IS version). A nice used copy will cost around $400. I'd use that for a while, steadying your rig on your camera bag for example. Eventually you're going to want an exte...

Curtis,
Thanks for the useful info. Very interesting about the winter-time carcass feedings. And I hadn't known many consider those wolves as a northern subsp. of red wolf, although I had heard of the possibility as a new species (eastern timber wolf).

I've been using a 5DII the last week or so, as I found one at a price I could justify splurging on (or perhaps selling for a small profit). However, it is a big jump in megapixels from my 1DIII (10mp to 21mp). The files are gorgeous, but editing them is almost impossible. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 9...

Algonquin Provincial Park?
Just curious if anyone has done and mammal- or birdwatching in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario. The possibility of seeing bear, wolves, moose, porcupine, marten, fisher, etc ...

Just bumped into a great price on a secondhand MT-24EX with Stofen diffusers. I was wondering how many Canon shooters own this flash and what lenses you find it useful with. Most of the state guides (perhaps all?) on herps that I have include possible, hypothetical, or unaccepted record lists. But they never do show detailed distribution maps for the area at the edges of that species range which nearly penetrate the book's said coverage. That does not bother me, however...
