Awesome stuff. Any serious birder needs to make it to the LRGV at some point. I've yet to go but salivate over the jays, orioles, doves, etc that you cannot find elsewhere in the US.

Re: Off-shoe Camera Cord for Flash or wireless setup
There is a product, the Canon ST-E2, that is a wireless transmitter. Fits in your camera's hotshoe and will do the trick. The off-shoe camera cords are pretty cheap; I bought a cheap-o Chinese version and it has worked well for me.

Northern Mockingbird
Haven't posted as I haven't been out. Did take a walk today and lugged the camera gear with me; I tried a 2x teleconverter for the first time, and it gave pretty decent results. Northern Mockingbirds are abundant in the south, but in northeastern Ohio I'd say they are pretty scarce and local. I usua...

There used to be a show called "Nature Scene" that I used to watch as a kid. Pretty much two naturalists visiting all sorts of parks across North America (and sometimes Europe) who just talked a bit about whatever they found. I really liked it. Anyhoo, they did a show on Bosque del Apache....

Truthfully, any DSLR these days is going to be pretty good, and the T3i is no exception. When it comes to DSLR shooting, it is the lens that is far more important than the camera body. I don't know if the price is outrageous, really. Look at Lowepro's top bags...or Tamrac's or Think Tank's, etc. I think the Gura Gear Kiboko, for example, is $399. The Dakine bag actually might be a more affordable option to many other bags, especially if it can hold a super-telephoto (500/4, 600/4).

Chris, that "least sandpiper" appears to be a juvenile Spotted Sandpiper. Although out-of-focus, you can even make out the barred wing coverts. Some people like spring migration most, with the colorful warblers, tanagers, etc. But the fall you get a much lengthier migration, starting with ...
