Re: A Couple Utah Milks From This Year.

Yes, the juvi's colors faded to a light grey towards the belly. That's not dirt. But couldn't it have been some sort of staining, Jon, rather than loose dust? It's just that the gray on the snake is such a perfect match to the gray of the substrate. Plus, the "fading" isn't only on the ve...

Re: Bought vs Homemade

I've never used a field hook other than my Stump Ripper, so I can't compare them. In my foolishly unthinking youth I did use it just as its name suggests, though, and I've used it to lift plenty of cover (that I can replace) since, too. I've also used it more than occasionally to help myself up stee...

Re: Bought vs Homemade

True enough, a (series of) potato rake(s) was my tool of choice before I bought a Stump Ripper. But on the expense of a really good hook like my Stump Ripper, I think of it this way: Sure it cost a lot, but in return it lasts a long, long time. I've put mine to all kinds of field uses, both appropri...

You probably already know my vote from recent posts, arf. I can't possibly manufacture a field hook as good as those one can buy and I don't like tools to fail me while I'm using them, so I say bought.

Why can't you get one over the internet?

Some of the best herp finds of my life have been made on roads under the light of full moons; the numbers of herps found have been lower, though, and I'm not about to assert that any of the cool animals I found were out there because of the big moon. But scattered rains,... when I lived in FL I used...

If it's just a paper here and there that you're after, there are probably a few of us around at FHF that can help you. (Such requests should probably be made in the Reading Room, though.) If it's more than that then the best bet is to make whatever arrangements with yonder library so you can access ...

Chris, you're making me homesick! (I'm originally from MN, and spent some years in college in northern WI as well.) I loved the entire show, but especially the claw-marks-on-bark shot, which is so cool that I would mat and frame it and hang it on the wall if it were mine. :thumb:

Re: What snake challenged you the most?

I used to see eastern coral snakes with some regularity when I lived in northcentral FL, but I used to hunt a fair bit later into the night/colder than a lot of herpers ordinarily do and I think that upped my odds of seeing them. Much of that time I was living in rural Putnam Co., too, where they se...

Truth be told, it matters very little where you go for your undergraduate degree.
