Re: Species in Big Sur
Big Sur is awesome, but can be challenging to herp. Most of the area is characterized by steep inclines and tough hiking. In June, it can be cool and foggy on the coast, but will likely be much warmer inland. In general, the redwoods and darker forests are lower in herp diversity. Chaparral, grassla...

Jimi, Agreed. I love exploring CA. I grew up there and visit family 1-2 times per year and always get out in the field while there. Despite this, there are still herps I haven't found and many places I haven't explored. The variation in topography, climate, and geology makes it an incredible place. ...

Re: Winter herping in socal?
Rain is key. Right now, conditions are dismal, as evidenced by the fires. Even in a dry year, some rain should come between Jan-March. You need some moisture and a bit of sun, but moisture is the most important factor in finding herps under cover in SoCal.

Salamanders should be relatively easy to find in March in Central CA. Moisture is the key. At that time of year, there should still be good moisture levels. Woodlands will tend to have the most sallies. Gently checking under fallen oak or pine logs/bark is a good method. Canyons or ravines with perm...

The Santa Cruz Mountains are a fun place to herp, but take a bit of time to figure out. No milk snakes there, but the zonata there are very similar. Re: Rock Flipping in Arizona in Monsoon Season
Snakes can certainly be found under rocks in the monsoon season in AZ, but not nearly as easily as they are in Spring. Even then, AZ is a far tougher place to flip than CA due to narrower windows, rapid warming, and overall harsher conditions. Generally, snakes will be under surface rocks to thermor...

July can be very rough in CA. I would suggest April-early June as your window. Flipping is good in Southern CA Feb-April. In Central CA, the window is April-May. Antivenoms are expensive in the US and there are several factors that play into this. Crofab, for example, which is the primary antivenom used to treat North American pit viper envenomations, can be $3-4,000 per vial. At face value, this seems crazy, but when one looks deeper into the situation, the...
