Re: I found a dark colored garter snake with ORANGE sides!

Post the pics!
Garters are about the most variable species out there. So odd colors aren't surprising. All that variation is cool as hell though and I love seeing oddballs. Very under appreciated snakes if you ask me!
If it was melanistic it would be black.

Re: so, in MA, what would opinions be if I handled a black r

Not stupid to take pictures of ratsnakes and post them. Stupid to take pictures of yourself handling them in mass and then posting them.
You don't need a great camera to get good observational shots. Moving slowly and deliberately will keep most snakes calm in your presence.

That little adder is STUNNING !! The smooth snake is cool as well! I know almost nothing about smooth snakes. From the postings I see here they seem to have a spotty distribution throughout their range. Are they a common species that is usually very cryptic?

Re: so, in MA, what would opinions be if I handled a black r

I honestly don't think any harm would come to the snake at all. They are a very durable species and quite tolerant of people. That said, I still think the coolest "interactions"with snakes are the ones where you take pics and observe natural behavior. I'm always pleased as punch ifn I can observe a ...

Look at em, love em. Leave them be :D
They are endangered in this state because it is the edge of their range. They are reasonably common farther south but in Ma RI and CT they have a spotty distribution.

Please put boards an carpet back in the original spots. Carpet works best in folds, not spread out like a board. Aluminum siding works best in stacks, not spread out over large areas. If you put the cover back it will produce over and over. You'll get to know individual snakes over time. Most of all...

Ironically, the mass production of farmed fish relies on fish based protein obtained from wild fish stocks. Methinks it better to properly manage wild stocks and protect spawning habitat. Oddly that seems hard to do. We are an impatient and impulsive species. Todays cause, is tomorrows memory. :?

Fish are a caveat. No exportation of reptiles, amphibians, birds or mammals. Which is why Brazilian dendrobatid frogs command such high prices. The founding stock was smuggled to Germany or the Netherlands then the captive born offspring "legally" imported to the u.s.
