Re: Southeast Chapter Member Biographies (2014 update)

Yeh, posting vouchers directly from the library is impossible. It gets exausting for me to post picheavy often. Great bio. Welcome to FHF Matt.
Thank you! By the way, I finally replied the other day to a message you sent me back in February. I never realized I had one in my inbox - sorry!

Re: Southeast Chapter Member Biographies (2014 update)

Hey everyone, I've posted here a few times in the past few weeks, so I'm overdue for a proper introduction. My name is Matt, and I've always been interested in reptiles, although I only adopted the hobby of herping in the past year. I'm 29 years old, married (proud parent of a 10-week old baby boy!)...

Re: Payne's Prairie Preserve or Highlands Hammock State Park

What do you want to know? Some nice trailed through some Cypress swamps and old orange groves and Gopher Tortoises around the campground; and the oldest Live Oak that I already mentioned. Are there a mix of trails and boardwalks? I get that impression from the state park page. And since I'll be dri...

Re: Payne's Prairie Preserve or Highlands Hammock State Park

LaChua trail is famous for its birds in PP. It also has a reputation for having awesome gators. I haven't been to the other location. I second Josh though, checking out WMA and the like would probably prove more productive. If you do end up choosing PP, PM me. I live right next to PP and may be abl...

Re: Payne's Prairie Preserve or Highlands Hammock State Park

If you aren't going to stay for sunset, you probably wont see too too much this time of year (It's been really hot during the day); that said, Highlands Hammock has a lot of shade, and the oldest Live Oak in Florida. If it were me, I'd go to a WMA instead where you can flip logs, dipnet and whatnot...

Payne's Prairie Preserve or Highlands Hammock State Park

Fellow Herpers, Two weeks from now, my wife is heading out of town for the weekend with our (soon-to-be) twelve week son, leaving me with a golden opportunity to herp in new locations. I live in Tampa, and since our son was born, I've only been able to go to a couple of local parks or the immediate ...

Re: Frustration

Jake, I understand your frustrations. So many people just don't want to educate themselves. Though perhaps there is some silver lining if these people leave the nerodias alone because they think they are venomous and want to avoid getting bitten. Just yesterday my neighbor killed a beautiful cornsna...

Re: ANF Trip IDs

I've herped every weekend so far this spring, and this is setting up to be my best year yet. I'll eventually gather up enough to make a real post.[/quote] I look forward to it! I'm really interested in finding out what can be found in the area I grew up. How long have you lived in MD? I think I may...

Re: ANF Trip IDs

Jake,

Nice oak toad! I see you are from Pasadena - I'm originally from Severna Park, but I live in FL now. Do you have any posts featuring our hometown herps? I hope to do a little bit of herping when I visit this summer!

- Matt

Re: Pasco County 4/11-4/20 (Multiple ID's needed)

Yuck - I didn't know we had cane toads in the Tampa Bay region!

Congrats on the scrub lizards - were those in Pasco Co. as well? Wasn't aware they lived this way. Also, nice shots of the black-crowned night herons! They are elusive birds but one of my favorite sights!

Re: Three Turtle Questions

I'm glad to hear that they are doing fine. I went by the spot I mentioned today and saw one large softshell, though I'm still concerned about the others not being present as in the past they were hanging out under the bridge in plain view every time, without fail.

Re: Three Turtle Questions

I'm glad you were able to get your IDs, but I feel that I must caution you against feeding the softshells bread. I asked a ranger at a nature preserve about it once and they were adamant that it's bad for them. Softshells are carnivorous and apparently have trouble digesting starches. The other turt...

Re: Tampa/clearwater area in april?

This is my first April down here, but there are plenty of parks that offer good herping opportunities. Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties are heavily developed, so you will have to travel a ways to find any herping spots that aren't part of a preserve or a park. Here are some of my favorite parks to...

Re: 2014 NAFHA Spring trip: ANF!

Man, this trip sounds like a blast! I've been wanting to go up to the panhandle since I moved to the Tampa area last summer, but I've got a kid on the way so it'll have to wait. I look forward to the trip report in a few months!

Re: Life's a Ditch

I may have to try that technique when looking for eastern narrowmouthed toads - like you with peepers, I've literally stood over them without seeing them. Very frustrating. Also, your first pic looks strangely like a spadefoot, but maybe that's just me. Could just be a lighter coloration on that spe...

I'm surprised VA has such a poor showing on H.E.R.P.
