Suggestions for Leticia, Colombia

Hey folks, just spent a week in a biological research station outside of Leticia. I got almost completely skunked and am guessing cause it was so dry. I'll detail it further in a trip report when I'm back. Really disappointing. Anyway, I'm in the area for another week. Lodges are expensive as heck. ...

Re: How do snakes act in the subtropics?

I was in Khao Sok for about 2 weeks in March, and I saw more snakes there, especially when it was raining, than anywhere else in Tland. Do the hike to the bridge at night and then poke around the river.

I have family in Bogota, plus, I haven't been to SA in a while, so I would like to get there. So far, I've been eyeballing Sierra Nevada and Tayrona, but I'll probably end up winging it somewhat. Been reading about Leticia since you brought it up, and will probably try to get there. I'll update as I...

Question: Travelling and herping in Columbia

Good or bad idea?
I hear it's pretty safe now, but I like to travel on the cheap and really get into the bush. Anyone have any experience here?

Better question, does anyone know anyone doing any research there or otherwise living in Columbia?

Cheers,
Alex

Khao Sok should be the number 1 most recommended to you. You will encounter no dangerous trouble in Thailand. Worse that will happen is you will overpay for some things, and if you are a real sucker you might get scammed. It's a great travel destination, but the travel time is a hard pill to swallow...

Really neat. I've looked for montane stuff in Ecuador. It's hard to find critters. Great finds. How awesome is the first time you pick up a tarantula? I (being somewhat scared of spiders) thought it was the most amazing feeling.

About 11 years ago, I bought a motorcycle from a guy in northern PA. He mentioned that he was involved in the local rattlesnake roundup. I mentioned that I didn't know they had them in PA, and he countered by saying yes, but we're not supposed to kill them, but to buy a tag to catch and release them...

Hi, The pantanal is the best! If you can, September and October are awesome. Just when it starts raining, herps will pick up their activity levels. If you go in the rainy season, look on the hammocks and on banks of the raised roads, as critters will be concentrated there. For mammals, the dry seaso...

Great shots! Nice post too. I'd be careful publicly claiming to have taken a timber skin. I'm told it's illegal in NJ where they enjoy similar protection (I think). That said, You'd have to bump into a stickler of a DNR official to write you up. I was told it falls under the same legal context as ta...
