Re: Anyone see the National Geographic article on Python ven

I find it somewhat amusing that this entire discussion has been sparked off by an article discussing a paper which does not in fact state that pythons are venomous . As is abundantly clear if you read the paper, it is an investigation of the relictual and/or incipient venom systems of certain toxico...

I'm sure there is a sumatrana conspiracy. The snakes all get together and agree not too hood and spit for anyone who looks somewhat inexperienced. They'll wait until after you've caught your 20th specimen or so and get lulled into a complacent "cobras don't spit, leave the glasses at home"...

Agreed that the Boiga is a juvenile B. cynodon - I have slides of baby albinos somewhere. Corals in general have very long venom glands, I believe. The long-glanded condition is unique (amongst coral snakes) to Calliophis intestinalis and Calliophis bivirgata (i.e. the species that used to be classi...

Nice Hans! Always great to find a snake you've been after for a while. As for the temperament, my personal experience with wild N. sumatrana (In Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Borneo) has been that they are generally very reluctant to bite, reluctant to sit still and hood and reluctant to spit. ...

I think DavidG has a plausible explanation. Having said that, the snake is not Cerberus rhynchops . Although it's hard to tell from the photos I'd say it's actually Homalopsis buccata - a freshwater species. So, if there are any streams or ponds nearby, it may just be that the snake was crossing the...
