Re: Unofficial Guide to Tadpoles and Morphs of the East
Great post and thanks for the updates. Tadpoles are another dimension when it comes to IDs. I am fairly certain that those tadpoles you have labeled as leopard frog with the extremely dorsal eyes and very visible intestinal coils are spadefoot. They tend to travel in pretty tight schools so you can ...

That is really cool. I would be ecstatic to see either the hatchling gopher or the hatchling terrapin you found. Nice work and thanks for posting. Bring on Fall!

Re: ANF let me in on it's secret.
Congrats, that is an awesome find. I have to admit that I was hoping to open this thread and find out what I have been doing wrong in ANF this whole time. I wonder a lot about how much weight we should give to conditions occurring when we find a target, especially when the number of observations is ...

I agree with the general consensus. My one an only simus was found on a road between two stands of dense sand pine plantation. If the soil is good, check it out.

Re: Tadpole ID Request
I think it helps to look at the eyes first thing to separate the ranids from the hylids. The ranids will have dorsal eyes which do not change the outline of the head when viewed from above while they hylids (most anyway) will have lateral eyes. I think the only exception to this is the cricket frogs...

Re: RFI: Smallmouth Salamanders around Columbus Ohio
Josh, I know this is not exactly what you are looking for and likely not in the range of Columbus you are interested in but I would like to put a plug in for Kelly's Island on Lake Erie. You will not find any pure blood smallmouths but you can find an interesting group of mostly unisexual (female) h...

Thanks for the comments, the picture turned out better than most of my nighttime shots but that is due more to luck than anything else. With the interesting weather lately, I thought I would go out last night for a long shot at some Pine Barrens. I was surprised to find them active. Re: Herping Pensacola, Florida?
There are some great areas near Pensacola and my recommendations would depend on how much driving you are able or willing to do and how long you are going to be here. There are some spots that are fairly close to Pensacola such as Fort Pickens and the Gulf Islands National Seashore which can be pret...

Re: Frog Egg ID?
I think that leopard frog is most likely with gopher frog also being a possibility. Size and shape looks right for leopard frog and they are definitely breeding right now. I have not personally seen a gopher frog egg mass but they are supposed to be similar to leopard frog just larger and more globu...

Re: Intorduction and End of the Year Post 2014
Great post, I really liked the diversity and always enjoy salamander heavy posts. I am pretty jealous of the pigeon mt., green and hellbender, still haven't checked those off of my list. I think that the egg clusters with the redback are from some kind of gastropod. Not sure if they are snails or sl...

Re: A short outing in the our mountains for salamanders
Bill, I loved this post. It reminded me of many of my night hikes in the mountains/foothills in several ways. These hikes are often exciting for the non-herps as well as the herps and showing the mammals and inverts really demonstrates this. I especially liked the picture of the slimy guarding it's ...

Re: ANF Round 1.5
Great post, it may have felt lackluster but you did better than I have on several occasions in ANF. Even a DOR king is worth the trip I think and seeing the copperhead it had eaten is just really cool. I have been to that same dredge pit and it was full of river frog tadpoles then too. They are such...

Re: The thrill of the hunt, or the prize at the end?
This question often comes up in other hobbies such as hunting and fishing, as some others have previously mentioned. For me, though I wish I could say it was otherwise, if I was going to be truly honest I would have to say the prize at the end. I have had some fantastic days when I didn't turn up an...
