Nice. How common are melanstic individuals in the species? The frequency of melanistic individuals depends on population. Up to ~62% in some populations (Forsman, 1995). The following three images were taken five days ago (4/4-13) in Jönköping, Sweden. The snake in the images is the same individual. Indafield and Kfen the air temperatures were about 2°C. The snakes were pretty sluggish and didn't really mind the camera. They didn't even hiss.

Seeing animals in their natural environment is clearly much more rewarding than keeping them in enclosures. Wild animals wil alsol display more normal behavior. You do not need to clean enclosures and you can spend all your time observing them free of charge. Congratulations

I don't know if it would be Fakkel or the vipers that would have made this trip for me. This guy's exploits are hilarious.
