Re: Great Smoky Mountains - October, 2011

Hmmm thanks Todd and Nate - guess I need to get better with my Desmogs. Todd, I called it a conanti because we found it in a low elevation seep (Cade's Cove area) where aeneus are not known to be present. The tail seemed more keeled than what one what see with aeneus too.

Geeze, thats a lot of reptile diversity for a quick weekend trip. Fantastic stuff!
Some of those geckos are really awesome, namely the Strophurus taenicauda.

Re: Part II: Twenty-something Lifers and Two Dead White Whal

Let me appologise as I'm not any good at photographing salamanders yet, and this was before Jason B schooled me on it, so they could've been better http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6095/6308513804_b436a022ec_z.jpg Looks pretty good to me! I'm a big fan of all the Aneides in this post, a species that ...

Thanks everyone for the compliments. A fun trip and I can't wait to go back! Caudata-saturated posts are always appreciated. This gives me some motivation to continue herping into November. Also, would anyone like to share with me this top-secret method for photographing salamanders? :thumb: Vince -...

Great Smoky Mountains - October, 2011

Hey all. Its been a while since I've posted on here. I used to be pretty regular on the forums, so maybe some of you remember me. If not: a brief bio: I am a student at the University of Guelph in cold snowy Canada. I'm studying Ecology and have spent the last couple of years studying a population o...

Re: So IL Sept 10; Unremarkable Trip Plus One Aberrant

Sweet photos! Nice find with the Diamondback water - thats one that I would love to see from so. Ill. For those interested, I was down there with some herpers for the second weekend of Oct. It was extremely dry, though we still had some success, especially at night. Turned up 49 taxa including a mud...

Curtis, Looks like a sweet trip out there! Nice shot of the Greater Shearwater. Andy, they are a stunning bird, aren't they? Did you see it in Ohio? Recent lifers here in Ontario include Great Gray Owl, Spruce Grouse (both up in Algonquin) and Buff-breasted Sandpiper I found the other day at my favo...

To continue the string of southern rarities this summer.....I saw a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher last Saturday (will post some poor digiscoped photos up when I get to it). Hatch year bird by the looks of it. It is shaping up to be a good year for vagrants!

Cool post Bob - you did alright considering they weren't necessarily herp related trips. Loved the macros of the fowleri, Coluber constrictor and the Carphophis.

Re: What was your last lifer?...

Chris, It certainly was a bit out of its range, that is for sure! Most birders seem to think that this is a wild bird - there is no evidence of it being captive, and this is a good Whistling Duck year for Ontario (if there is such a thing!). Two seperate flocks were seen in late spring, as well as t...

Black-bellied Whistling Duck - will probably be the 3rd accepted record for Ontario. Excuse the poor digiscoped shots.

An example taken with a Panasonic point and shoot from a couple of years ago. One of the main problems I had with this camera was Depth of Field. Last few weekends in Ontario

This summer has been a really busy one for me as I have been putting in 60-80 hours a week down near the Ontario/Michigan border studying Butler's Garter Snakes. However I do have my weekends off, and since the girlfriend is in eastern Canada for the summer, I have had a lot of freedom to go herping...

Re: Canada, eh?

That's a fantastic day - I didn't even realize all those species made it that far north. Southern Ontario actually has quite a few species, relatively speaking. We have 47-48 species of herps, which is on par with states like Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, a few western states, etc. Every species ...

Too bad you couldn't stay for a second day. Great photos as usual, and I am anticipating getting back ou...

Nice meeting you a few weeks back, and looking forward to the weekend - hopefully you can see some Canadian rattlesnakes. J...

Latest "lifer" - not technically a lifer but new to my Ontario list. Had a Snowy Egret fly over my study area a few days ago. ON bird #303 I think.
