The sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 dg macrois popular with a lot of herpers. It isnt 1:1 macro, but will do a good job with most animals.

There are some shots of ants and grasshoppers on their website which look pretty close to 1:1. I am pretty impressed by it, I use a canon 16-35mm F/2.8 and find it difficult to get close enough with smaller subjects when doing in habitat shots. Thanks fellas. Captain Jack, most are taken with a canon 16-35mm F2.8. Usually around the 16mm end. You want to use something as wide as possible as depth of field increases.

Chris, I have never herped that area but I know it is going well at the moment. Plenty of scrubbies, coastals and frogs are out and about at the moment, plus just about everything else. Most national parks are open all the time. I have heard good things about Mossman gorge.

A bit of the point there Chris. Sensor size means everything. A full frame sensor compared to a cropped sensor or micro4/3's all of the same megapixels will win hands down for low light capability. You are correct with the first, Morethia lineooccellatus.
The 2nd is Egernia napolensis.
The 3rd and 4th are Egernia kingii.
And the last you are also correct with, Morelia spilota imbricata.

Nice work Hans. I have recently had the pleasure of showing around a few Americans, some French and a Pom. They all asked what the bin lid was for before heading out. By the end of the trips they realised how valuable they are when photographing aussie elapids.

Fantastic way to finish off. Amazing shots. Great work on the Mixophyes fleayi, they can be difficult to find. Also the Antichinus is a great shot, they are very difficult to photograph. Your mammal list and shots are brilliant, I am quite jealous and I live in Aus.

I always use mine to the detriment of other cars. I find you can see the edge of the road better, they are also great for spotting our oversized rabbits here downunder.
