Monographs or field guides for Argentina and/or Chile
Does anybody know of a country-wide field guide to Chile or Argentina? I've found some peer-reviewed pubs that focus on specific regions or inventory surveys, but I can't find the equivalent of a 'snakes of argentina', etc. I don't necessarily want one from the countries north of the cone, as I'm in...

Intermedius, that Pseudotriton is stunning. I really gotta get west of the Hudson some more...I remember catching those in the creek and in the mulch when I was a kid. I can't remember the last time I've seen one.

Sounds like an epic evening. It Seems like fate that your tire went out and you stopped right then and there. I'm glad that the folks in the other vehicle stopped when you flagged them down. Great photos, too...very crisp. I'd love to see an everglades python.

Thanks for sharing. That's pretty nice you can go out on a whim and get a couple of timbers and a copper. I love times like that. The Shenandoah valley is a magical place. I hope that you'll post more of your finds from the area, maybe some pictures next time!

If you're going to go with a peterson field guide, I would go with the new one that just came out. I like it a lot and it covers the basics pretty well. The range maps can be quite coarse and a bit off at the edges, but that's to be expected in a guide that covers such a large region.

I have the new one and I prefer it over the old version so far. I have yet to examine it extensively but I had some initial thoughts: Overall, I like that the taxonomy and associated range maps have been updated. Lots of splitting and lumping of species has been accounted for to reflect some more re...

The pitvipers are harder to come by in this part of the country compared to the west. Also, the coppers like to bask beneath leaf litter, so you may not see them even when they are 'out'. When I spent time out west, I became envious of how readily they were encountered with minimal effort. Definitel...

Re: Fungal Disease in Wild Snakes?
How sure are you that they perish from the fungal infection? Many snakes will come out of hibernation with sores and can recover after a few sheds. That may not be the case if their reproductive organs are complete rotted, but a lot of lesions and stuff can be the result of hibernation. Given the ti...

I loved this post. Oklahoma has some awesome critters. I passed through in late august and met up with a friend. We got a timber on the first cruise of the first night, crossing the road in a fairly developed area. I was surprised by how plentiful the snakes were across the entire state. Great photos!
